The planet is in need of initiatives that use biotechnology, in our industry, they represent the future of sustainability. GLITCH firmly believes these initiatives not only demonstrate an environmental commitment and pave the way for a more ethical and responsible industry. By leveraging biotechnology, brands can reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, minimize environmental degradation, and contribute to the creation of a circular economy. We encourage you to try unlocked innovations like mushroom leather and bioengineered dyes, two examples of the transformative potential of biotechnology in fashion. I was part of the jury that brought together dozens of participants from Southwestern Europe (Portugal, Spain, and Italy) in the city of Valladolid, Spain, on November 26th, 27th, and 28th. The Biorural project is an initiative promoted under the European Circular Bioeconomy Challenge, of which the Biomass for Energy Center is a part. This event gathered startups, entrepreneurs, specialists, and academics from the three countries to foster innovative solutions in the circular bioeconomy, promoting sustainability and the valorization of underutilized resources. During the three-day event, participants had the opportunity to engage in personalized mentoring sessions, interactive roundtables, and success story presentations in an excellent networking and convivial atmosphere. Among the highlights were keynote speeches from pioneering companies such as Spain's BIOLIZA and Portugal's SCIVEN, which shared their experiences and best practices in the sector. Out of the 12 innovative projects in the competition, the first prize was awarded to AgroBioTex, a Portuguese initiative led by young researchers from the University of Coimbra, which transforms agricultural waste and sheep wool into eco-friendly textiles, reducing solvent use by 80% and replacing synthetic dyes with sustainable alternatives. Second place went to the Spanish project Protiberia, which converts mushroom substrate waste into high-value protein-rich animal feed using the insect Tenebrio molitor, promoting waste reduction and sustainable protein production. The third place was awarded to an Italian project offering a technological solution that gasifies wood chips to produce electricity, heat, and biochar without ash emissions, contributing to the energy autonomy of remote mountainous areas. The winning projects will benefit from specialized coaching provided by the Science Park of the University of Valladolid, enabling their ideas to reach the market and generate a positive impact. The initiative was organized by AVEBIOM (Spain), AIEL (Italy), CBE, and the University of Coimbra (Portugal), with support from the Valladolid Agency for Innovation and Economic Development (IDEVA) and the Science Park of the University of Valladolid. The next challenge will take place in Brussels in May 2025, where these finalists, representing Southwestern Europe, will compete against winners from other European regions.

This week we hosted our virtual conference Innovate: Marine-Derived Textiles. Ocean harvesting/the use of marine-derived resources is a topic we are increasingly getting asked about at WTiN. As such, we wanted to bring our members (and beyond) a deep-dive into this emerging and exciting corner of the industry - it's so full of potential. We looked at innovations in dyeing and pigments, fibres and yarn development, ocean plastics as a feedstock, regulations, end-of-life considerations, paths to commercialisation, establishing brand partnerships and so much more. Here are some key takeaways from the conference: 📈Scalability is key with this emerging technology: scaling in a sustainable way that doesn't interrupt existing infrastructure so risk is limited 🌳 End-of-life considerations need to be taken into account at the beginning of development processes but they must be taken into consideration across the whole of the supply chain. What good is it for your fibre to degrade if your dye doesn't? etc. This discussion needs to happen between partners 🏛 Market and regulatory drivers are pushing brands towards more bio-based (and marine-based) solutions. These solutions are also bound by regulations but this should not stifle creativity in this emerging space 🤝Brand partnerships. Brands hold the power when it comes to the success of an innovation and driving adoption. Choosing the right brand partner is critical for innovators 🔎 Transparency and traceability are paramount to ensure consumer confidence and quality (and needed to back-up claims) A huge thank you to all our speakers including Lutz Walter Thamires Pontes Renana Krebs Ietje Klaver Scott Fulbright Laura Hayes Jessica Giannotti Bianca Schasfoort-Zomer Natalia Sergeeva Fuzhong Zhang uyen tran Sjoerdje Meijers Katrina Knauer, Ph.D. Francois Devy World Textile Information Network (WTiN) To find out more visit: https://lnkd.in/eeiakW45 or if you would like to access the content please DM me.
