Assembly is using alternative energy sources to lower carbon consumption and operational costs. We are using Geothermal heating and cooling on our projects at 60 Bowden St. for WoodGreen Community Services, 215 Wellesley St E. for Elizabeth Fry Toronto and 2217 Kingston Rd. for Thunder Woman Healing Lodge Society. Geothermal heat pumps are a sustainable and cost-effective solution for thermal control. These systems use the earth's constant temperature, deep below the surface, as an exchange mechanisms for heating and cooling. Using geothermal energy eliminates the need for gas-powered heating and cooling significantly reducing the carbon consumption and operating costs of buildings.
🌎 Alternative energy sources help drive sustainability in the development industry. UrbanToronto is celebrating Earth Month throughout April with features that examine the issues and challenges of #sustainability in the #development industry. Thank you to our sponsors, Assembly Corp. & Wyse Meter Solutions Inc., for helping us highlight sustainability throughout the month. #planning #design #architecture #housing #realestate

Newly published 2nd article of my PHD out now! Anne Viljanen, Mikko Kurttila Anne Toppinen (2024): Retrofitting urban areas with wood. Silva Fennica, 53, 4, 23068. Highlights: 🌐 Decarbonizing building stock reguires businesses to create new solutions for markets. 🌐 Wood-material based retrofits offer new possibilities but are rare in urban context. 🌐 The city-owned housing companies are found to be most aware of seizing opportunities of climate-benefits and facelifts in less appealing suburban areas. 🌐 Actors use dynamic capabilities in niche-level projects, yet the reconfiguring stage of business models is not visible #decarbonhome #forefrontcities

In a time when human ambition is showcased through the scale of our constructions, Megaprojects represent the pinnacle of modern engineering, financial power, and socio-environmental awareness. These enormous endeavours reshape lifestyles, from the towering heights of skyscrapers to the vast expanses of new cities. I underscore in this policy paper the complex dynamics of Megaprojects, dissecting the interplay of financial innovation, environmental stewardship, and socioeconomic strategy. These insights provide valuable lessons for the successful execution of current and future infrastructure projects, paving the way for resilient and thriving urban landscapes. #Megaprojects #SocioeconomicDevelopment #Urbanism #FinancialViability #SustinableUrbanDevelopment #ChangeManagment #Innovation #ScenarioBuilding

Earthship! Cannot be build anywhere but also are the vital example of sustainability! They cool by themselves, heat by themselves and is completely sustainable. Isn't this what we need? Architecture that aligns with the planet. https://lnkd.in/dNjHdnUn

Construction is at a crossroads. With 40% of global carbon emissions coming from the built environment, the urgency to innovate has never been greater. We don’t just want to reduce those emissions - we want to lead the industry into a new era of smarter, greener construction. This isn’t just about new materials or shiny tech. It’s about rethinking what construction can be. The green building market is set to skyrocket to $24.9 trillion by 2030, and those who recognise the shift early will be the ones shaping the cities of tomorrow.👏 We’re turning cutting-edge ideas into concrete solutions (literally) that don’t just brighten the skyline - they transform it. From renewables to intelligent building systems, we’re making sustainability the new standard, one innovation at a time. #SustainableConstruction #CarbonEmissions #Decarbonisation #TechInnovation #ScalingInnovation

🌍 Rethinking Construction: Time to Ditch the Take-Make-Waste Approach 🌍 A powerful article by Pablo Cristi Worm at Turner & Townsend sheds light on the critical role of the construction sector in tackling carbon emissions. According to the London Energy Transformation Initiative, buildings are responsible for 49% of annual carbon emissions in the UK, with non-domestic buildings alone producing an average of 1,000kgCO2/m² of embodied carbon. Key findings highlight that: 48% of a commercial building’s embodied carbon originates from the superstructure, while 17%, 16%, and 15% come from its substructure, facades, and MEP, respectively. Nearly half of the embodied carbon in a project results from materials and construction, while 45% comes from maintenance and replacement. This underscores the urgent need for innovative, circular construction methods. At #4Earth2Mars (https://www.4omid.com/), we’re developing #CircularArchitecturalTechniques (CATs) to meet this challenge. Our initiatives, like the #LunarNomadYurts and the #CircularBlueMoonVillage, are designed to create reconfigurable, resource-efficient habitats that reduce environmental impact and optimize material use. We see great potential for collaboration with forward-thinking stakeholders in the construction sector who are ready to rethink materials and emissions. 🌍🚀 Together, we have a chance to bring our vision to life at #Basecamp, NL Space Campus, (https://lnkd.in/eB3w9HQZ) Municipality of Noordwijk, creating sustainable habitats both on Earth and, one day, on the Moon. Let’s connect and explore how we can drive impactful change! It’s time to fix another piece of our jigsaw puzzle. 🧩 Read more: Why construction should ditch its take-make-waste approach https://lnkd.in/eCugRg6g #CATsToTheStars #SustainableConstruction #CircularEconomy #LunarNomadYurts #CircularBlueMoonVillage #ConstructionInnovation #CarbonReduction #BasecampNoordwijk #ImpactCollaboration #nkw2024

1wI think the article gives the balance of benefits and risk which everyone needs to be aware of however the risks and red flags have already become manifest in the disastrous retro fit spray foam rollout. Standard detailing as it used to be called is turning out to be very problematic in the retro fit landscape and the lack of understanding amongst trades will mean variance will not be adapted. Yes there is urgency but the significance of getting it wrong with these types of products quickly becomes manifest. Quality and speed have never run in parallel. I would like to see more emphasis of joined up training of the key principles for install trades as the back bone of the initiatives.
