National Retrofit Hub’s Post

How Archetyping Supports Retrofit at Scale 🏡🔧 Scaling up retrofit to meet net zero targets requires practical, efficient solutions. In her article featured on elementalLONDON's website, Rachael Owens explains how archetyping can support more systematic retrofit planning and delivery. By focusing on archetypes, we can develop standardized approaches, optimize resources, and address the retrofit needs of millions of homes across the UK. This approach is a key step toward delivering retrofits at the scale and pace needed. I think the article gives the balance of benefits and risk which everyone needs to be aware of however the risks and red flags have already become manifest in the disastrous retro fit spray foam rollout. Standard detailing as it used to be called is turning out to be very problematic in the retro fit landscape and the lack of understanding amongst trades will mean variance will not be adapted. Yes there is urgency but the significance of getting it wrong with these types of products quickly becomes manifest. Quality and speed have never run in parallel. I would like to see more emphasis of joined up training of the key principles for install trades as the back bone of the initiatives.
