NEW from Count on Coal: EPA DOUBLES DOWN ON THE GRID RELIABILITY CRISIS "While much of the coverage today has reprinted EPA talking points, stunningly little attention has been given to the existing grid reliability crisis and how remarkably out of step EPA’s regulatory blitz is with what the nation’s reliability experts and grid operators have warned we should be doing to responsibly manage the energy transition." Close the door on your way out… It powered the Industrial Revolution and made Britain a global powerhouse coming into the 20th Century, but after 142 years and an eye watering amount of CO2, coal will no longer be a part of the UK’s energy mix from today. This brilliant article by the folks at Carbon Brief provides insights (and some really useful charts!). In particular, there’s plenty of inspiration and food for thought around how policy, regulation and long term planning can align and progress things way faster than people think is possible. Coal is gone, on to the next… #everythingelectric #stopburningstuff #cleanenergy #renewables #energystorage

The closure of the Ratcliffe on Soar coal fired power station on the 1st October 2024 brings to an end 142 years of coal power in the UK. The UK is the first G7 country to do so and is looking to go one step further by fully decarbonising power supplies by 2030. In 2023, 44% of electricity was produced by renewables. This really interesting article sets out the journey from being wholly reliant on coal to being fully decarbonised.

While #coalpower declines why is the SE so inclined to transition with #naturalgas? For now, it is about reliability, pricing, and the need for infrastructure or infrastructure upgrades for most #renewableenergy sources.

Sammy Roth of the Los Angeles Times highlights the ongoing challenge of decommissioning coal plants in the Western U.S., with 32 still operational despite significant progress in renewable energy adoption. Roth's analysis, supported by Sierra Club data, underscores the urgency in phasing out these plants to mitigate climate impacts. The Biden administration is poised to introduce stricter pollution regulations for coal- and gas-fired power plants, reflecting a broader push towards clean energy. Despite the complexities of the Western power grid and varying state policies, initiatives like converting coal plants to cleaner technologies and regional clean energy commitments indicate a shift towards a sustainable energy future. Roth's detailed account stresses the importance of continued advocacy and regulatory action to accelerate the transition from coal. https://lnkd.in/gJMmFK8c

Fantastic news today as Britain officially ditches coal from its generation stack! ⚡ Shortly after I started working in the energy industry, there was a huge cheer when Britain had it's first coal-free day since the industrial revolution on the 21st of April 2017. Now to see coal generation removed entirely (particularly when energy security is such a pressing issue) is an outstanding achievement and a reflection of the progress that has been made over the last decade. There is still a long way to go, but I'm excited to see what the next 10 years of innovation and investment can deliver on our path to decarbonisation. #netzero #coalfree #decarbonisation

Eraring, forecasted to close in August 2025, has highlighted its necessity to stay online by playing a vital role in the NSW grid. Amidst high demand and grid pressures in NSW, the power plant showcased its crucial role by supplying up to 16.5% of state power in February, but debates over its 2025 closure are heating up 🔥. Negotiations between Origin Energy and the state government about keeping it on have dragged on for about six months, and they continue as challenges such as ash storage and no long-term coal contracts post-closure could impact future costs and the transition to clean energy 🌱. How much is that Windfarm in the window the one with the dodgy claims ? Snake oil politicians peddling shonky reports from foolish policy wonks. As a reminder, the Conservatives have set a target to decarbonise the grid by 2035 (NZ2035) and Labour want to accelerate that by five years and deliver a Net Zero grid by 2030 (NZ2030). Time to dig into the report, examine Ed’s claim and the accuracy of the analysis
