⛔️ Leaders at the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) have urged political parties to focus on problem-solving rather than point-scoring, as the general election edges closer and waiting times remain at an “untenable and totally unacceptable” level. 🎯 The RCGP’s chair, Professor Kamila Hawthorne, has expressed concern that ‘vote winning’ may be front and centre of political thinking this month, leading to “gimmicky” and “unrealistic” targets that fail to address the root of the problems in general practice. 📈 The RCGP says that rising and increasingly complex workloads — along with a stagnant full-time equivalent workforce — are the main causes of patient access issues. Expert commentary and future steps outlined ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eC-V5TVY 📢 Royal College of General Practitioners Kamila Hawthorne | #GeneralPractice #GPs #GeneralElection #WaitingTimes

The below words are from the article, based on the available evidence from the summary part ‘What can be done?’: A decade ago, research into organisational behaviour in the NHS concluded: “The NHS exhibits too high a level of collective ego defences and protection of its image and self-esteem, which distorts its ability to address problems and to learn. Organisations and the individuals within them can hide and retreat from reality and exhibit denial; there is a resistance to voice and to ‘knowing’”. This is exacerbated if the concern raised by BME staff is about racism or bullying. In Too Hot To Handle? (2024) our report found racially minoritised staff face common responses when raising concerns about race equality. These include: denial reluctance or refusal to acknowledge race as an issue a lack of empathy In addition, there are common shortcomings in race-related investigations. These findings correlate with findings from a number of Employment Tribunals we reviewed where BME staff had successfully sued NHS employers over their treatment when raising concerns, notably the successful landmark claim by Michelle Cox, a Black nurse manager, who whistle blew about the treatment of patients and was victimised for doing so. We suggest NHS organisations can create a culture freer from race discrimination by: developing an appetite for ‘race talk’ and setting standards of behaviour that challenge ‘everyday’ racism developing greater levels of comfort in staff speaking out about racism and ensuring concerns are acted on without retaliation acting on the early warning signs of racism by tackling racism more informally and being proactive when evidence would suggest there might be a problem imparting the skills that all staff need to get closer to genuine anti-racist practice, with particular development needed for boards, leaders, and professionals whose roles directly uphold the values of their organisations. Crucially, there needs to be a learning culture where staff can be confident they will be heard, listened to, and their concerns acted on, without risk of resultant detriment. The culture and behaviours – the organisational deafness – of those with authority is the prime obstacle. This is even more so with BME staff. Boards need to end the protection and recycling of individuals engaged in race discrimination. Doing so will make a very significant contribution to patient care and safety, alongside a recognition of the detrimental impact of unchallenged racism on NHS staff of BME heritage. We urge you to make explicit recommendations about this issue, far too long the subject of avoidance, denial, and collusion to the detriment of patient care and safety, organisational effectiveness, and staff health and wellbeing.

As a former family caregiver and someone who’s dedicated my career to supporting older adults and their families (including teaching health policy), I was all ears when I heard Kamala Harris propose Medicare coverage for home care services! Imagine the impact on families nationwide if such support became a reality. This proposal raises some big questions: Could it gain the bipartisan support needed in a divided Congress? While long-term care affects every family—crossing political, financial, and geographic boundaries—the solutions and price tags often vary widely among policymakers. What do you think? Could this be a step toward more accessible care for aging Americans? Read more about the idea and the questions it sparks!

The Board of the College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC will have 12 members: six registrant members and six public members. Although profession-specific inclusion at the Board level is not about representation, the intention is for each profession to have at least one seat on the Board, with not more than two members from each profession. Earlier this year, Board members and Committee members of the current colleges were given the opportunity to submit applications to serve on the Board or a Committee of the College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC. These applications are currently being reviewed. We expect the Ministry of Health will appoint Board members in May and Committee members in May or June. We are preparing the expand the National Contract Value Review process for all Phases of research next month! And what a journey it has been so far… This wonderful video is a timely boost for this work. It gives insights on delivering commercial research from the Primary Care setting and mentions the impact of expanding this process beyond secondary care NHS Organisations. This is enabled through a voluntary sign up scheme for Primary Care organisations, which is managed through the NIHR working with system partners across the UK. The intention behind establishing a consistent and predictable approach for costing and contracting is keep making it easier to set-up and access research on the places where the UK’s patients are. Let’s keep going! There’s always more we can do. #IamNIHR #changemakers #NCVR https://lnkd.in/eRfVqX58
