Over the past decade, autism diagnoses have increased by 175%. According to a recent study, that rise was seen primarily among women and girls. Historically, autism in women has been underdiagnosed because young girls tend not to fit the stereotypes around the condition. But new research is changing the clinical definition of autism and everything we know about it. Rising tide of autism diagnoses is a global health concern, with a staggering 175% increase over the past decade. This surge is particularly pronounced among women and girls, who have long been overlooked due to the traditional male-centric understanding of autism. The outdated "boy-like" stereotypes have masked the unique presentation of autism in females, leading to underdiagnosis. However, groundbreaking research is redefining autism, challenging the narrow spectrum and shedding light on the diverse ways it manifests in girls and women. This paradigm shift is crucial for early intervention, tailored support, and a more inclusive understanding of neurodiversity.

So very true - we see a tidal wave of women, who previously have been diagnosed with burnout, eversive personality, anxiety, depression, and stress, caused by underlying autism. The major problem is that female autists are Great masters of masking and their psychologists, psychiatrists and therapists do not look behind that masking. Typically, females with autism become nurses, socialworkers or teachers working with neurodiversive kids, after having 3 children, they break down and burnout due to perceptual and social overstimulation for decades. Than they come for assessment for autism, decades to late, their lives in ruin. It is the female genderrole itself that is the hinderance. NB! Excessive horseback riding, gymnastics and swimming are indicative of female autism, almost everytime, as computergaming is for male autism.

If we all spent the money to educate the public and increase “their” level of empathy, instead of labeling the people in autism spectrum as “not empathetic” and institutionalising to be forced to fit in a fixed one-dimensional reality, we would have gone a long way ahead as society with more colorful experience of everyday life.

Digital interventions have made strides in helping collating evidences and analysing solutions. Many therapists and researchers are contributing to it. Hope to go a long way.
