On July 26, 2024 E-bike battery exploded in an elevator in China, as a result the man got bodu burning injury. This is not the first incident of a fire accident in a lift associated with an electric bike. In May 2021, five people including a five-month-old baby were injured after an e-bicycle exploded in an elevator in Southwest China. The incident prompted stringent bans on e-vehicles in elevators and residential buildings. Some elevators have also been installed with smart devices that will stop the lift when it detects an e-vehicle inside. Why do e-vehicles catch fire? According to Arjun Kolishetty, director, Ravi Firetech Safety Engineers Private Limited, Hyderabad, the lithium-ion batteries in the E-vehicles catch fire mainly due to heating issues. “When the battery gets heated, the temperature rises and a chain reaction occurs, causing an uncontrollable rise in temperature, leading to fire,” says Kolishetty. Kolishetty further says that it is difficult to extinguish lithium-ion fire with traditional fire extinguishers. A special type of fire extinguisher known as Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion (AVD) is used to douse lithium-ion battery fires. According to Uday Vijayan, managing trustee and president, Beyond Carlton, a fire safety community, bad wiring and poor quality electricals can lead to such mishaps. Attempts at cost saving and not adhering to standards can have hazardous consequences. “The owner should also ensure regular maintenance and servicing of the device,” adds Vijayan. Precautions to prevent E-vehicle fires Kolishetty lists some safety measures to reduce the incidents of electric vehicles blowing up: -Ensure that the e-vehicle is parked in shade, away from direct sunlight. -Ensure that the vehicle is properly ventilated to prevent overheating. -Use compatible charging stations and devices recommended by the manufacturer. -Avoid fully draining or charging the battery. Refrain from charging the device i-mmediately after riding/ driving it. Allow some time for the battery to cool down. -Keep a lithium-ion battery fire extinguisher or a lithium fire blanket in the vehicle’s boot space. #safetyfirst #accumulatorssafeservice #E-vehicles
