Huge thank you to Saharsh Agrawal, founder of Surface Labs (YC S23), for leading a phenomenal guest speaker session with Catalyst XL and our students. Here were some of my favorite takeaways: - When picking a startup idea to work on, one of the most important factors is conviction. Your belief in your product and mission will play a major role in your success. - If you're going to work at an early-stage startup, in some cases, it can make sense to just start your own company instead. You'll learn more and have more ownership and control over the outcomes. - If you're launching a software startup, you can approach early sales like custom-building solutions for your first customers. Find out what they want, and try not to waste time coding anything more than that. The talk was exactly what many of us in Catalyst needed to hear as we think through the earliest decisions at our own ventures. Thanks again Saharsh! #entrepreneurship #founders #builders #venture #startup #innovation

Early-stage founders, is your idea ready for lift-off?🚀 One of the most critical steps of the entrepreneurial journey is validating your startup idea. Before investing countless hours and resources, ask yourself these important questions: 1. What problem are you solving, and how big of a dent will it make? Is your idea creating real, positive change in the world? 2. Can your idea scale beyond a small, specific market? Are you aiming for a broad audience to fuel your growth trajectory? 3. Does the idea resonate with your core values and what truly matters to you as a founder? 4. Is this a problem your target audience ACTUALLY faces? Does it cause them frustration and hinder their success? By answering these questions honestly, you'll be well on your way to building a startup with a rock-solid foundation. Startup founders, we'd love to hear your stories - what were the biggest challenges you faced when validating your idea, and how did you overcome them? Today had an engaging conversation with an old acquaintance who works in a startup. We discussed the importance of product metrics during Series A and Series B rounds. Realized it’s a pivotal moment for a startup’s liftoff. Explored a few questions and found this topic to be crucial for many. Leaving this file here, perhaps it’ll be helpful to someone. #Startup #ProductMetrics #Growth

Building a startup will break you. But that's where the magic happens. I've met 500+ founders in the past year. Here's what I learned: It's Not Glorious - Sleepless nights - Empty bank accounts - Self-doubt But Here's What Works 1. Keep Going (even when it's hard) 2. Surround Yourself with people who believe in you 3. Be Flexible (change plans when needed) Startup Life is a Long Haul What's your toughest startup moment? #startup #founder #startupmoment

Speed or Structure for a startup? I asked it here on LinkedIn short ago - It's a common dilemma many founders face. When you have a clear direction, speed can be your ally. Move fast and adapt on the go without worrying too much about a detailed plan. However, if you're still figuring out your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) and business model, taking the time to establish a solid foundation is crucial. Rushing into decisions at this stage can lead to unnecessary setbacks and potentially harm your product in the long run. #Startup #Lean

The Harsh Reality of Startups: Success is a Miracle It's a tough truth: most startups, even the well-funded ones, are likely to fail. Making it in the startup world is nothing short of miraculous. Miracles don’t happen with teams that crave stability and fear uncertainty. These mindsets can quickly lead a startup to failure. What startups need are problem solvers—people who embrace ambiguity and are driven by challenges. These are the ones who turn the impossible into possible. So, let’s embrace the chaos, tackle meaningful problems, and drive innovation forward. #StartupLife #ProblemSolvers #Innovation #TechStartups
