East Riding and Hull Announce the Construction Summit: People & Skills. Invest East Yorkshire and Invest Hull are pleased to announce the latest Construction Summit, set to take place on 20 November 2024, at MKM Stadium. The event is designed to bring together businesses in the region, within the construction sector to focus on their key assets, people, and their required skills. 50% of the construction installer workforce is due to retire in the next 5 years 🚨 That was one of the scariest stats that I learned at The British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installation (BiKBBI)’s excellent Annual Conference last week in London. The event taking place during #NationalApprenticeshipWeek couldn’t have been more apt, as well over half of the day’s discussion centred around how to make apprenticeships more attractive to both the workforce of tomorrow and to the businesses who will desperately require these new workers in the very near future. 'Driving industry change through collaboration' was the theme of the event. If we want to solve this oncoming crisis, we’ll need collaboration from much more than just the people who met in London last week. Better access to: • Education pathways • Government support • Incentives to drive the young to want to join this industry are all going to be vital steps to begin solving this crisis in the coming years. I have recently written an article for Construction Management magazine that delves into the construction industry's skill shortages. It analyses the impacts of an ageing workforce and the poor recruitment rates of younger workers through apprenticeship schemes. My advice to clients is that to attract the right talent into the sector, it is crucial to adopt innovative methods and technologies. This is an important evolution in the homebuilding skills landscape. We need to evolve new pathways & modes of training to address the industry’s urgent need for a more competent and productive workforce. With regulatory standards changing and consumer expectations increasing, pressure on the homebuilding workforce will increase just at a time the workforce is facing downward pressure on numbers. We need to accelerate progress in competence building for both new workers and ultimately for existing workers too without compromising on standards to allow us to do more, to a better quality and with finite resources. Initiatives like this are key as part of a wider reform of the construction skills landscape.
