AI funding halved in UK despite ChatGPT boom Overall investment into UK-based AI companies almost halved in 2023 compared with the year prior despite the technology dominating the zeitgeist, according to new research. Last year, 291 UK AI companies raised £1.4bn across 311 announced funding rounds, compared with the £2.9bn raised in 2022, according to an annual private equity report from Beauhurst. The research examined equity deals for private companies in the UK from January to December 2023. The launch of ChatGPT from OpenAI at the end of 2022 caused a surge in interest in AI technology, with many investors throwing billions at Silicon Valley’s AI giants. The UK’s AI sector, while one of the world’s largest, still saw a drop-off in funding last year. This was due, in part, to a broader downturn in deals stemming from a challenging macroeconomic environment and rising interest rates. However, the reduced investment does not mean there is less interest than expected in UK AI companies, according to Beauhurst. The report noted that the AI sector received nearly 12% of total private equity investment in the country, suggesting the funding dip was largely a result of a wider decline in tech funding. The report also found that 65% of British AI firms that received funding last year were London-based. The most funded AI region after the capital was the East of England, while Scotland saw the most AI funding of the UK’s constituent countries after England. Just 6.7% of AI companies funded last year were founded by an all-female team. Across all subsectors, all-female founded companies raised 9% of UK investment in 2023. Notable funding rounds for UK AI startups last year included Synthesia’s £71.4m raise and Unitary AI’s £12m round.
