Irish Medtech Director Eoghan Ó Faoláin said, “#MedtechRising comes at an interesting time as we gather in the wake of the general election. One of the key session topics our 500 attendees are eager to explore is how Ireland is positioned to compete in the face of global trends. The next Irish Government now has an opportunity to plot a new course for future success. Ireland is one of the top five global medtech hubs, 450 companies, including 9 of the world’s top 10 medtech companies, with exports of €16 billion, and more than 48,000 people employed. However, we cannot take our international standing for granted which is why Irish Medtech met with the lead parties to advocate for a national health technology strategy to be implemented over recent weeks, and as the programme for government is drafted we’ll continue to raise the industry’s concerns as the voice of medtech.” https://lnkd.in/eDcy8YuT Pictured (l-r) Bronwyn Brophy, CEO, Vitrolife Group, Eoghan Ó Faoláin, Director, Irish Medtech, Ibec, Dr Cepta Duffy, Head of High Potential Start Up Unit, Enterprise Ireland, Jacqueline Henderson, President EMEA, Johnson & Johnson MedTech, William Corcoran, Manager, East Coast Medical Technologies and Healthcare Services, IDA Ireland and Pádhraic McGinn McGinn, Irish Medtech Chair, CEO, Mergon Group. We had a great time connecting with the vibrant Belgian MedTech community at MedTech MeetUp! Here are a few key take-aways on how Belgium could become a MedTech valley. 1️⃣It takes a village: bringing innovative solutions to the market requires skills, time and financing. In Belgium, we are lucky to have lots of support available, such as tech transfer offices and cluster organisations (@MEDVIA, @BioWin - The Health Cluster of Wallonia and @lifetech.brussels), to connect the whole ecosystem. 2️⃣It also takes talent: not only do we need to continue shaping future generations of entrepreneurs and experts to bring MedTech to patients and care professionals as quickly as possible, we can also help companies find the right talent at the right time: events such as MedTech MeetUp that can facilitate matchmaking. 3️⃣And of course, it takes financing: competition is fierce for grants, incentives and investments. Closing the gap between the initial idea and market entry is a challenge, and entrepreneurs must be prepared to do more with less. By exchanging best practices and insights, the Belgian MedTech sector can grow faster. 4️⃣Lastly, it takes a winner’s mentality. With a combination of talent, academic excellence, an advanced care system and a vibrant ecosystem, Belgium has lots of cards to play when it comes to MedTech, and should consider positioning itself as the testbed for MedTech innovations in Europe, and even globally - and that starts with daring to dream big! The MeetUp ended with a showcase of some great innovations that are already out there, such as @IDEVAX and @Intressa Vascular, companies that won the prestigious GalenusPrize for most innovative medical device (VAX-ID) and most promising design (Allay Aortic Stent) respectively. Congratulations to the winners!
