Rebuilding Our Communities through Community Capital! When we look at disinvested communities, the challenges are clear: lack of affordable housing, unemployment, the absence of Black-owned businesses, and food deserts. These systemic issues create barriers to the basics—like access to healthy food, housing, and jobs. But within these problems lie opportunities for local small businesses, entrepreneurship, and revitalization. The question is: How do we bring the capital needed to make it happen? Community capital is the answer. By empowering local residents to invest in their neighborhoods, we can generate the resources needed to create jobs, build affordable housing, and open Black-owned businesses that provide healthy, accessible food options. We want to thank Akron Community Foundation for awarding us a Proactive Grant of $52,000! The grant will assist DAP in developing an equitable framework that will inform the latest iteration of the Downtown Akron Vision + Redevelopment Plan 2022+ as we continue to bring new businesses and residency to the city's core. The 2018 Downtown Akron Vision + Redevelopment Plan was a similar consensus-led plan which brought over $200 million in private investment to residential projects. The recommendations for the equity framework will include successful best practices learned from other cities, which will be applied to workforce development, employment, financial literacy, small business development, entrepreneurship, development financing, and housing.
