Law firm merger mania continues unabated and is a world-wide phenomena. Kristin Stark, a principal at Fairfax Associates, attributes the frenzy to client pressure and the difficulty for firms outside of the Am Law 50 to grow via lateral activity, without getting dented by attrition. After a strong first quarter for law firm mergers in 2024, the past week saw no fewer than six law firm combinations, along with a large group move in Boston. Larger firms’ desire to expand into new markets and smaller firms’ need to become more competitive underscored a merger flurry that stretched from Boulder to Boca Raton, according to interviews and press releases from the moves. An appetite for growth in the Am Law 200 and competitive pressure on boutiques are likely to fuel more mergers in 2024, said law firm consultant Kristin Stark of Fairfax Associates. “We continue to see steady interest in law firm merger discussions, so I do anticipate the numbers for 2024 will be higher than 2023,” Stark said. In the third major law firm merger announcement in less than a week, Womble Bond Dickinson and Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie said they will combine effective Jan. 1. The deal will create a 1,300-lawyer firm with 37 offices in the U.S. and U.K. The firms, which said they had combined gross revenue of more than $742 million last year, will operate under the Womble Bond Dickinson name. Womble, the larger firm with nearly 1,100 attorneys, is the product of a 2017 transatlantic merger between North Carolina-based Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice and U.K.-based law firm Bond Dickinson. The firm has 640 lawyers across its U.S. offices and about 450 in the U.K. Phoenix-based Lewis Roca has 220 lawyers in Colorado, Nevada, California and Arizona. I wrote a dating column! Well, law firm dating at least... I decided to play matchmaker and suggest a few transatlantic mergers that could work. They are based on which firms are open to a merger in theory, along with an analysis of financials, practice areas, and geographic footprints. Firms mentioned include: Linklaters, Herbert Smith Freehills, Ashurst and Clyde & Co. #Lawfirms #BigLaw #Mergers #Dating
