Another luxury cruise vessel was denied entry to New Zealand last month pending additional hull cleaning. This could have been avoided with in-transit hull-grooming robotics. Not only are dirty hulls dangerous for delicate ecosystems due to the transfer of invasive aquatic species, added fuel costs and millions in losses take their toll on fleet operators and local economies. 🔗 Follow the link in the comments to learn more about the incident and how climate change is enhancing the so called “dirty hull syndrome.” #biofouling #innovation #technology #climatetech #greentech #shipsandshipping #regulation #compliance #engineering

https://lnkd.in/dYfEmEsE You, me and climate change. Ditch biocide antifoul. Marine sustainability is closely connected to climate change as the increase in global temperatures and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are causing significant environmental changes in the oceans. Climate change is causing sea-level rise, harming fragile marine ecosystems, and increasing the frequency and severity of storms and extreme weather events, which can cause devastating impacts on marine life, fisheries, and aquaculture. Additionally, the rise in ocean temperatures is leading to ocean acidification, which can disrupt the delicate balance of marine ecosystems and harm the health of marine organisms. Thus, the need for marine conservation and sustainable practices such as reducing carbon emissions, protecting ocean habitats, and managing fisheries sustainably becomes crucial to mitigate the impacts of climate change on oceans. Today we joined another eight organisations to strongly condemn the Government's attempt to change the Ħal Far Local Plan so as to allow the construction of an airstrip for model aircraft in Wied Żnuber. The secret agreement for this airstrip was reached in February 2022 between three government agencies and the Ħal Far Model Flying Association, which allocated public land for a miniature airstrip for model aeroplanes occupying 17,000 square metres. The structure will not only gobble up natural land but also introduce constant noise and light pollution, impacting a much larger Natura 2000 site and posing a threat to the local ecosystem, which includes a nearby shearwater colony. As the Government opened the second phase of the consultation process aiming at changing the Local Plan so that a so-called "low impact sports" be permitted in the area, yesterday the Kunsill Lokali Birżebbuġa and Għaqda Storja u Kultura Birżebbuġa announced they have now collected over 1,000 objections to proposed amendments to the local plans that would pave the way for the project. The public can object to these plans by sending an email to [email protected] by the 24th of July. #WiedŻnuber #ĦalFar #miniature #model #aircraft #airstrip #Natura2000 #lightpollution #noisepollution #shearwater #colony #impact #objectnow

https://lnkd.in/dm-_Hvic Why marine sustainability is not taken seriously. There could be several reasons why some people do not take marine sustainability seriously: 1. Lack of Awareness: Some individuals may not be aware of the issues facing marine ecosystems and the importance of their conservation. They may have limited exposure to information about marine sustainability or may not understand the long-term consequences of their actions on the marine environment. 2. Conflicting Interests: Economic interests, such as fishing, shipping, or offshore industries, may conflict with marine sustainability measures. Some people prioritize short-term economic gains over long-term environmental sustainability. They may not see the economic benefits of a healthy marine ecosystem or may believe that the costs outweigh the benefits. 3. Denial or Skepticism: Some individuals may deny or be skeptical about the scientific evidence supporting the need for marine sustainability. They may question the validity of research or believe that environmental concerns are exaggerated or politically motivated. Denial or skepticism can prevent people from taking these issues seriously. 4. Lack of Personal Connection: People who do not have personal experiences with the marine environment may not feel directly impacted or connected to it. Their daily lives may not involve regular interactions or dependencies on the ocean, leading to a lack of personal motivation to prioritize marine sustainability. 5. Government and Policy Inefficiencies: Governments may fail to implement or enforce effective policies and regulations to protect marine ecosystems. Inadequate or inconsistent policies can create a perception that marine sustainability is not a priority, leading people to believe that their individual actions will not make a significant difference. 6. Short-term Thinking: People often prioritize immediate needs and benefits over long-term consequences. Marine sustainability often requires long-term planning and efforts that may not provide immediate rewards. This short-term thinking can discourage individuals from taking actions to support marine sustainability. 7. Prioritization of Other Issues: With numerous global challenges, some people may prioritize other pressing issues such as poverty, health, or climate change over marine sustainability. They may feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of problems and choose to focus their attention and resources on different areas. Arivo.online

Helena Aurora Ranges I have just completed an eco-tour with Red Track EcoTours through the Helena Aurora Ranges. It was amazing. So, I dug up some history for the ranges. Read on about what is happening and proposed, and why, as recorded by the government and private lobbyists. “The Helena and Aurora Ranges are 2.5-billion-year-old banded iron formation ranges that have outstanding landscape values. The area is also rich in biodiversity and cultural values. Importantly the area is habitat to the mallee fowl, a threatened species of bird. There are also a range of different marsupials that call the area home including the little long-tailed dunnart, echidna and pygmy possum. There are nine registered Aboriginal sites within the proposed national park including mythological sites, ceremonial sites, paintings, and engravings. Stage one involved the upgrade of the existing non-class A Mount Manning Range Nature Reserve to class A national park. The next stage involves the conversion of Mount Manning Conservation Park to class A national park and requires the development of an Indigenous Land Use Agreement with the Marlinyu Ghoorlie native title claimants. The Helena and Aurora Ranges are the jewel in the crown of the Great Western Woodlands, which is regarded as the largest remaining area of intact Mediterranean-climate woodland left on Earth, and contains about 3,000 species of flowering plants, about a fifth of all known flora in Australia. (Ministerial Announcement PWS November 2023) “The Helena and Aurora Range, also known as the Bungalbin, about 440 kilometres east of Perth and 100km north of Southern Cross, has long been of interest to mining companies due to its iron ore deposits. But in 2017, after two mining applications and nine subsequent appeals were rejected, the WA Environment Minister announced the area would be protected. The first stage of the Helena and Aurora Ranges National Park was then declared in 2021, spanning 149,000 hectares, although this did not include the rock formations. (ABC Esperance/By Emily JB Smith/Posted Thu 30 Nov 2023 at 9:50amThursday 30 Nov 2023 at 9:50am, updated Thu 30 Nov 2023 at 11:44am). So, there is more to be declared as a national park. On average, a diesel-powered yacht of about 60 ft. consumes around 10 l/h while stationary. Keep in mind that this can vary based on factors like engine size, efficiency, and onboard amenities. Over the course of a day, this would translate to approximately 240 liters of diesel consumed, while the yacht is anchored in a beautiful bay. A regular motor yacht consumes above 30 thousand liters only stationary, during high season (20 weeks of summer season). What means, an emission of more than 18 tons of carbon dioxide into the environment. A Silent yacht anchored on a bay burns 0 litres of fuel; it is an autonomous yacht. #SilentYachts #Innovation #EngineeringExcellence #Efficiency #SustainableBoating #YachtDesign #Hydrodynamics #PerformanceOptimization #EcoEngineering #EnvironmentalImpact #GreenInnovation #YachtingTechnology #Aerodynamics #EnergyEfficiency #DesignInnovations #OceanExploration #FutureOfBoating #SustainableLiving #SolarYachting #Yacht #SolarEnergy #SolarPowered #BoatingLifestyle #Sailors #Future #LuxuryYacht #Adventure
