Compassionate leadership was one of many topics discussed during my View From The Top interview at Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Thank you Ayesha Karnik, Liz Walker and Peter DeMarzo for this memorable experience. Always a pleasure to connect with the next generation of leaders and hear their thoughtful questions! The full interview is available to watch on YouTube (link below in the comments).
And that is truly felt in the work environment at Chanel. This is not to say that it’s a perfect environment, but decision made are carefully considered and are sincerely “pro-employees”. I have never felt valued and taken cared of than where I am now. With my employment history of almost two decades, it’s only in Chanel where you are encouraged to shine and be at your best. I have long dreamed of being part of this fabulous legacy of Madamoiselle Gabrielle “coco” Chanel, to the extent of paying a visit to here tombstone and claiming in front of her that I want to be part of what is to come in Chanel. Only to find myself celebrating my first year anniversary on the 5th year that I visit Mademoiselle Chanel’s final resting place. And this I can say is serendipitous moment that I am whole heartedly grateful.
I sense Leena Nair you are are talking about of Wise CEO Creed. It is all about Courage, Clarity, Conviction, and Compassion in action Courage: Tackles inequality and bias, respects natural limits, and sacrifices for long-term goals. Clarity: Unites teams with purpose, aligns actions with mission, and balances vision with action. Conviction: Upholds ethics, fosters trust and loyalty, and commits to continuous growth. Compassion: Ensures fairness, supports community well-being, and promotes shared purpose beyond profit. In tough times, a Wise CEO's creed is unshaken: embody courage, clarity, conviction, and compassion, even when circumstances are rough or progress is uncertain. These values provide a steady foundation, guiding authentic leadership that remains resilient and impactful, regardless of the obstacles and failures.
I couldn't agree more with you Mrs Nair. Having over 20 years of experience in retail luxury, it has been saddening for me to see that the leaders on top perhaps have the least amount of compassion and responsibility in their role. Instead of being role models they sit on their power to enjoy their ego rub, not realising the beauty of team work and growing each person who is putting their trust in you for their career path. I realised the importance of this thanks to the most wonderful bosses and mentors I started my career with; they shaped me into a compassionate leader while teaching me to keep yearning to deliver perfection every single day. I live by that even today which only makes me realise more and more how important the role of a leader is to shape the future. Utmost respect for you to address these issues in your interviews and watch you lead in this beautiful manner which is not only the responsible way but also so fulfilling personally.
Such an inspiring interview! I truly admire your journey and personality. You are a remarkable example of an empowering global woman leader in today’s corporate world.
It all starts with being empathetic, compassionate, #beinghuman

1moThank you Leena Nair for your inspiring words. As an advocate and facilitator in training for compassionate leadership, I could not agree more. The world of business is in dire need of compassionate leadership right now. An abundance of 30 years of research proves that not only is it beneficial for organisations in terms of motivation, retention and productivity. More importantly, the health benefits are substantial and profound.
