I enjoyed this read about Renate Nyborg's journey from Headspace and Tinder to developing Meeno, an app that uses AI to enable human connection in the real world. Meeno hasn't launched widely yet and I've not tried the app, but it was positive to read about the process and critical reflections behind it, including: Researching loneliness and seeking critical perspectives - Nyborg reached out to an expert on loneliness, Ron Ivey, who was sceptic about using technology to 'cure loneliness' when unhealthy use of technology is already part of the problem. Calling the chatbot an 'it' - the goal is not to create an online partner, but to help the user improve their real-world communication and relationships through prompts and reflections. Disincentivising addictive use - the app encourages short bursts, ideally less than 20 minutes at a time. Engagement isn't the end goal. #AI #technology #empathy #criticalthinking https://lnkd.in/ecF2bb5C

Whilst I absolutely LOVE that there are more people out there trying to create solve's for the world's loneliness epidemic, I just can't believe that the solution relies on more conversations with a bot, and more faces staring at a phone screen versus a human face. This fills me with hope and sadness all at once. Can we possible solve the lack of connections by filling our time with more connections that have no real human at their core? What do you think? I would truly love some perspectives here.... https://lnkd.in/gRWmQ7ca #empathy #AI #bot #dialogue #coaching

AI is becoming a popular tool for men on dating apps 💬❤️, with 20% of men aged 25-35 using tools like ChatGPT to craft messages and profiles. A study of 1,371 users on apps like Tinder and Bumble found that over a third of those using AI felt more confident in their interactions 💪✨. Platforms like YourMove.AI, with 250,000 users, now specifically target those who are shy, introverted, or new to dating While AI-driven dating assistance is growing 📈🤖, relationship experts caution that these tools may lead to inauthentic connections, as initial impressions might be based on AI-generated communication rather than the person’s true self 🤔💔. Some dating platforms, including OkCupid and Tinder, are also exploring AI features to enhance user experience 🌐💑, but this trend raises questions about authenticity and the potential impact on real connections. https://lnkd.in/gkiHSSeS

There is no world where the current dating tech landscape doesn't burn itself down. They clearly have no clue how to solve the problems they have created. AI in dating might be just about the worst idea anyone could have for word calculators. Absolutely no good will come from such a notion. They don't understand that this model of match-as-much-as-you-can-to-increase-your-chances doesn't build sustainable, vulnerable relationships. That the trend is towards slow moving and familiarizing yourself with a person over time. ...or they absolutely understand, and they're fighting tooth and nail to keep a profitable model running as long as they can, despite the pain and suffering it causes. https://lnkd.in/dSUbf87Q
Opinion | Bumble is flirting with the idea of AI-power dating. It’s a bad idea.

"Meeno draws on what Nyborg learnt about consumer tech and human behaviour while working on some of the world’s best-loved digital products. It provides an unusual service: AI-powered relationship coaching for a new generation of lonely adults frustrated by the limitations of an increasingly isolating world of online interactions she was once a part of." Earlier this year, while I was researching generative AI-powered chatbots for addressing interpersonal violence and abuse in a safe, personalized, and non-intrusive way (unlike the use of smart speakers for such purposes, as highlighted in a recent Australian study: https://lnkd.in/e3Xa4GYv), I came across Meeno as a potential solution. It's great to see the strides this app has already made. Link (paywalled) in the original post. #GenerativeAI #responsibletech
The Financial Times has a great article on Renate Nyborg's work on Meeno, written by Madhumita Murgia. The article is paywalled, but I appreciate Renate (as well as Harvard's Ron Ivey)'s leadership speaking about the dangers of the AI fake girlfriend/boyfriend industry and the risk of this leading to greater loneliness. Renate says "Men didn’t want to meet girls because they had virtual girlfriends who said exactly what they wanted to hear." To regulators wondering what are the risky applications of AI, I would urge taking a look at the fake gf/bf industry! In contrast, Meeno gives advice for human relationships, and is working to bring people together. Working to reduce human loneliness is a wonderful goal! https://lnkd.in/gsg2JCJP

#Virtual #relationships and #digital #companions are the most mind-boggling #AI use cases (even for me)! And that ex-CEO of Tinder herself has to sound alarm bells about their hidden dangers, is something to ponder. Wasn't this the very promise of AI that it'll free humans to focus on creating better life, and by extension have better relationships? Then things certainly are not going in that direction. Dear followers, if you have access to Financial Times, do add the mentioned article as your Sunday read.

Technology should be regulated in one way or another. Relationship should not be regulated in any way, be it real or whatever. But relationship should not be limited by technology either...
