From worsening water quality to respiratory and mental health impacts, drought can have profound and widespread impacts on the health of communities across the nation. To better prepare health professionals’ response to these impacts, a UNMC College of Public Health research team recently released a guide to assist healthcare providers and public health officials in communicating about the health risks of drought with their patients and communities.' “Drought is often overlooked as a human health threat in the United States,” said #NSRIFellow Dr. Jesse Bell, co-author and Claire M. Hubbard Professor of Water, Climate and Health. “However, we are starting to better identify the health impacts of drought. For example, our team has identified increases in respiratory mortality, heat-related mortality and reported stress associated with drought events.” The guide is a product of a multi-year effort supported by NOAA’s National Integrated Drought Information System, the NASA Health & Air Quality Program and the Claire M. Hubbard Foundation. 📘 Guide: https://lnkd.in/gRDMhqYj 📰 Article: https://lnkd.in/gHwZmZQG #NSRIFellows #publichealth #drougt #healthcare #mentalhealth #onehealth #nationalsecurity #homelandsecurity #water #climate

Florida reports an increase in Vibrio vulnificus cases, linked to Hurricanes Helene and Milton. With 74 cases and 13 deaths this year, health officials are attributing the rise to higher bacteria concentrations in warm, brackish waters following flooding. Vibrio vulnificus can cause severe infections, especially in those with open wounds. As climate-related events become more frequent, monitoring and prevention efforts remain crucial. #PublicHealth #Vibrio #ClimateImpact

#DidYouKnow that extreme heat is the top weather-related public health hazard in the United States? Heat waves may not be as violent as other climate disasters such as hurricanes or wildfires, but they are statistically more deadly. Paul Schramm of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explained in an interview to EESI that it can be difficult to predict the impact that heat can have on communities in various places: "The difficult thing about extreme heat is, what is classified as a heat wave is very different in different parts of the country depending on where you are and what you normally experience. For example, if it is 85 degrees Fahrenheit in Maine for several days in a row, that is a threat to health, with increased visits to emergency departments for heat. If that happened in Arizona, you would not see anything like that." Check out this article #FromTheArchives to learn more about how communities can become more resilient to the health effects of extreme heat: https://ow.ly/3YEo50Sny5q #HeatWave #ExtremeHeat #GlobalWarming #PublicHealth

Incidences of extreme drought have trebled since the 1980s. By way of perspective, mankind has existed for 300,000 years. That's a big, big change in relatively short timespan. https://lnkd.in/eBvAtisC
