The French Congress voted on Monday March 4, 2024 the inclusion of the abortion as a Constitutional Right (IVG). In doing so, France becomes the first country in the world to explicitly refer to the notion of the right of voluntary termination of pregnancy in its Constitution. The video shared below summarizes +50 years of fight for rights to achieve today's milestone: from criminalizing abortion with the guillotine in the past to integrating a fundamental right into the Constitution in 2024. Why it is important? Protect the 'freedom of women to voluntarily terminate a pregnancy" is part of sexual and reproductive rights, which are an integral part of human rights. These rights concern essential aspects of the person linked to their body, their sexuality, their health, their emotional relationships, their parental choices. It is therefore essential to strengthen the existing legal framework so that the right to abortion is never called into question, considering that several countries are regressing and ceasing to guarantee the effectiveness of this right for women (i.e. US, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Poland). As a fundamental right into the Constitution it has a greater legal value, making it more difficult to modify than when it is guaranteed by law, granting the possibility of being immune to the political wills of successive divergent majorities. Nevertheless, barriers will still exist, we have to acknowledge that this is an important step forward and a fresh air of freedom considering these challenging times due to the rise of the extreme right and religious fundamentalism. Simply, voting is our opportunity to ensure Colorado continues to be a leading state for women’s safety, opportunity, and prosperity. It’s no secret that women’s freedoms are on the line in 2024. People who are threatened by equal rights for women, LGBTQ+ people, and people of color want to roll back our progress. But with our votes, we can maintain control of our bodies, families, and economic futures. We can ensure that we as Coloradans have the freedom and means to pursue own paths to happiness & prosperity. The Women’s Foundation has taken positions on three statewide ballot measures and four local ballot measures that will protect the progress we’ve made as Colorado women and continue to advance opportunity.
