Food For Thought for International Women’s Day! I was revisiting a book by Prof. Jim Collins called Built To Last and came across this fascinating analogy about building an organization. It goes like, Having a great idea and building business around it is like being being a time-teller, only you can tell the time and it cannot be done without you. But building a company/organization is like being a clock-builder. It exists even after you are gone. In my view, that’s the true measurement of significance, is that can it exist without you. In that, women, I feel, have played a significant role not only as nurturers of future generations but also as leaders in industry. I admired Indra Nooyi’s path. Day 1 of the ISB Accelerate Your Growth Program: A Transformative Experience Today marked the beginning of the Indian School of Business Accelerate Your Growth program - Cohort 1, and I couldn’t have asked for a better start! The 4-hour training session with 50 inspiring women entrepreneurs, all guided by the incredible Amrita Nawal. The techniques Amrita introduced were nothing short of enlightening. One that resonated deeply was the Canvas Activity—a powerful exercise that shifted our perspectives on leadership and teamwork. In this activity, we were asked to paint our challenges and changes on a canvas. The twist? After a few minutes, we had to move to another person’s canvas and continue their painting, just as others did with ours. When we returned to our original canvases, we found that the outcomes often differed from our initial vision. Yet, we were encouraged to own the results, make adjustments if necessary, and appreciate the new direction. This exercise beautifully mirrors the CEO’s journey: We plan and envision, but our teams may interpret and execute differently. The key is to accept these outcomes, recognize the value in the unexpected, and give due credit to our teams for their contributions. This openness to the unknown fosters growth and innovation.
