Recently I've been writing about growth and talent in the world of management consulting and am starting to build a theme around it. Why? The obvious answer is that our firm is growing and we are working to attract the right talent that can adapt to our ever-evolving and very unique model that blends excellence in management consulting with the entrepreneur's playbook. I've worked for many years in both leadership and management - always in pursuit of developing high-performing teams. This post sets up an open-ended question as we explore the world of progressive management and high-performance with what is a notoriously challenging group of people to manage. If you are a management consultant, then you are probably: ambitious, smart, a self-starter, used to getting your own way, a strong negotiator, an excellent problem solver, service-oriented, and generally highly disciplined. If you are an entrepreneur, you may be: creative, curious, resourceful, networked and a bridge-builder, a visionary, able to carve through the impossible, able to perceive solutions to problems no one else sees, and...nimble. Both 'groups' tend to know which rules to break, how to move through challenges with relative ease, and how to create something out of nothing. Blue Monarch Management was inspired, in part, because I wanted to surround myself with people who were generally smarter and more creative than me and with strong principles and values - who fit into both camps of management consulting and entrepreneurship. We have also integrated strong analytical capabilities - for management consultants to open up relationships and build momentum on a client's investments, and analysts to bring the power of data and information into our storytelling and to keep us organized. My question is...what are the progressive high-performance teaming fundamentals you have found most effective when working with groups such as those I've described? And why?

Despite the “connection” issues :), thank you Shaker Zainal for the great conversation. I am glad we got to discuss key points on the struggles of entrepreneurship/business ownership but also the UAE strategic positioning to support SMEs’ growth. They are the backbone of a sustainable economy. One of the questions that keeps coming back when we end up talking about my own journey, is how I had ‘different careers’. I always say the experience of working in big corporations from private sector to government entities, in family businesses that go international (Like Zuhair Murad), in startups and entrepreneurship through Sarwa ثروة and also my previous venture in Beirut, is what shaped me today. Here’s my take on why this could be invaluable. In each job, you learn new technical skills and also soft skills. In every role, you are growing. From the big corporates, you get a better understanding of the dynamic of big groups and you get to learn about: - Structured Processes and common goals: You learn to navigate and operate within well-defined procedures, hierarchical structures, and established workflows. This gives you insights into how to do large-scale operations and what corporate governance is. - Specialization: You develop deep expertise in specific verticals because of that segmented nature of responsibilities, so you focus on the task at hand, within a larger organisational framework, where the rest is taken care of by other teams, and other departments. In Startups/lean teams: - Adaptability: it’s the mindset of flat structures, where you become so multidisciplinary and have direct insights into what others do, a luxury you do not have in big organisations. You learn to wear multiple hats and adapt quickly to changing environments, developing a broad skill set. - Initiative and execution: You become driven by quick execution. You are in a culture that rewards innovation and entrepreneurial thinking, often taking on significant responsibilities and making impactful decisions quickly and early in your career. When you are a founder/business owner, it’s a whole new set of skills: - Leadership and Decision-Making: You gain the ability to make strategic decisions across all aspects of the business, from operations and finance to marketing and human resources. It requires a bird-eye view understanding of how each function impacts the overall success of the company. - Resilience: You develop skills in managing risks, overcoming challenges and a proactive approach to problem-solving when faced with roadblocks, to ensure the sustainability and growth of the business. Of course, there is a lot more you learn, and there is a lot of overlap. But each experience is enriching on its own, and I have been lucky in my career to have experienced all three. I wouldn't change a thing. Thank you Mohammed Bin Rashid Innovation Fund for this opportunity.

Attracting Money Through Value Creation 1. Beyond Hard Work: Focusing on Personal Development As Robert T. Kiyosaki famously states in *Rich Dad Poor Dad*, “The rich don’t work for money; they make money work for them.” This principle emphasizes that the wealthy focus on personal development, skill acquisition, and strategic thinking rather than sheer hard work. This resonates with my experience in the consulting industry, where I’ve observed that successful leaders and entrepreneurs invest significantly in developing their creative abilities and innovation skills. The key to attracting money isn't in the physical labor but in the mental work—shaping your mindset, honing your skills, and developing a strategic approach to problem-solving. Networking with like-minded professionals, accessing mentoring and coaching, and staying updated on cutting-edge knowledge are crucial steps in this process. I've found that being part of such communities in Lagos, where innovation and entrepreneurship thrive, has significantly enhanced my ability to generate valuable ideas and execute them effectively. **Reference**: - *Think and Grow Rich* by Napoleon Hill discusses the power of personal development and the mental aspects of wealth creation. - *The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People* by Stephen Covey emphasizes personal growth as a key to success. 2. The Centrality of Value Creation in Wealth Attraction** The ultimate approach to attracting money is through value creation. Every successful entrepreneur or business leader I've worked with understands that money flows naturally to those who create value—whether through a product, service, or idea that solves problems or meets people's needs. For instance, in my consulting work, I've helped organizations develop leadership programs that directly address the challenges of middle-income professionals in Nigeria. This not only solves a critical problem but also creates substantial value for the clients, which in turn generates revenue. The principle here is simple: if you consistently solve problems and meet needs, money will follow. **Reference**: - *Blue Ocean Strategy* by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne illustrates how creating new value in untapped markets leads to wealth. - *The Lean Startup* by Eric Ries focuses on creating value through innovation and efficient execution. .
