Here are 3 things that VCs are peddling about the finance and revops world that are wildly off-base and removed from reality 👇: 1. ❌”Everyone’s moving away from spreadsheets and into nice AI powered dashboards!!” This is categorically false. When we interviewed over 100+ finance professionals and CEOs they all said it would take a village to pry spreadsheets from their cold dead hands. It makes sense why VCs are peddling this. They have their shiny new companies that are spreadsheet alternatives that they are trying to shove down everyone’s throat and trying to get you to believe that it’s the new way to run things. It’s not. At least, not yet. But best of luck to those companies, they’ve got their work cut out for them. 2. ❌ “It’s pretty easy nowadays to get revenue and FP&A dashboards in minutes due to APIs being widely available.” This sounds like a VC who just goes to every FP&A and BI dashboard company, looks at the website and believes everything is easy as a click of a button. THIS COULD NOT BE MORE FALSE. We’ve heard from companies making as little as $100k in revenue that implementation of dashboards with the right data took weeks, if not months. Yes, it’s 2024, and this is still a pain for CEOs and finance teams with current tooling. 3. ❌ “You should tell Heads of Finance that you will put swarms of AI agents all over their data. That will probably land pretty well.” Dear God no. I’ve heard this multiple times from pretty established VCs, and it is so removed from reality that it’s unreal. We even tested it: we went to some heads of finance and led with asking their feedback if we led with AI in the pitch. Needless to say, it didn’t land well. Now, don’t get me wrong: there’s a right way to place AI in the conversation with finance. CEOs are more likely to want this too. Our product will have some element of AI. But there's a nuanced way you have to pitch this. Some companies are going to learn this the hard way: what works as an investor pitch won’t work well on the ground with users. — — It’s completely baffling me that a LOT of VCs are wildly getting it wrong in terms of what’s happening in the world of AI in finance/revops versus what’s actually happening on the ground.
