To pretend that there is almost any similarity between small and big businesses is absurd. Small businesses have to serve us, or they fail. Big business tries to entrap us in debt to ensure that they keep growing ever bigger. We need to rethink what we think about the private sector – and what parts of it we want to promote.

100% this! Small businesses will have to lead the transition because larger businesses can't and won't do it. Small businesses are flexible and adaptable. Most importantly, they serve their communities and their teams, and they tend to protect their environments fundamentally because they live in the areas where they do business. There are two problems. i) Governments and politicians don't understand small businesses, and they underestimate their impact. Instead, they fund large and fast-growing businesses. If we used well-being measures of success instead of GDP, this would change. ii) Small businesses and their owners are already incredibly vulnerable to shocks, both from personal and family problems and from the markets and external forces. They have little to no protections in place to support them. If you add the climate crisis ( both transition and physical risk) to this mix, you are looking at a disaster. Unless we build resilience in our small business community quickly, we face a massive problem. The economy is incredibly vulnerable to climate change because it is concentrated in the hands of too few businesses. It is too easy for the system to break because of one disaster in one area or in one supply chain. We need a huge number of small local businesses to add resilience and variety to the market. Small business is the answer to the climate crisis and the system change we need, but it needs support 💚
