Scientists have achieved a groundbreaking milestone by successfully transmitting solar power from space to Earth for the first time. The Space Solar Power Demonstrator (SSPD-1) accomplished this feat using its Microwave Array for a Power-transfer Low-orbit Experiment (MAPLE). Unlike conventional terrestrial solar panels, these space-based energy harvesters remain unaffected by factors such as day-night cycles, cloud cover, or weather conditions. Estimates indicate that these space-based systems could generate up to eight times more power than their surface-based counterparts. SSPD-1's remarkable ability to survive the harsh space environment and function effectively opens the door to larger-scale implementations.
