📌 Pressure/Vacuum Relief Valves are protection devices typically mounted on a nozzle opening on the top of a fixed roof atmospheric storage tank. Their primary purpose is to protect a tank against rupture or implosion by allowing the tank to breathe, or vent, when pressure changes in the tank due to normal operations. Vacuum relief valves are used in water heater/tank applications to automatically allow air to enter into the piping system to prevent vacuum conditions. Air vacuum valves are designed to prevent the formation of a vacuum inside the pipeline that could cause the pipeline to collapse or allow backflow of fluids.

It’s funny that most plumbers don’t even know what an expansion tank is for they think it’s there to protect the water heater from being over pressurized. An expansion tank increases the water pressure on your waterlines you can air it up to increase the pressure to whatever you want. As far as pressure relief safeties for water heaters they’re usually built into the water heater they’re called T&P valves.

The Surge can be mitigated by the following options: - Use of pipework with a higher-pressure rating. - Rerouting of the pipeline avoiding high/low points. - Changing of piping material, thus altering the wave speed. - Increase of the pipe diameter, thereby reducing the velocity. - Increase of pump inertia if it is applicable. - Adding bypass lines. - Slow closing valves. - Vacuum Breakers. - Pressure Relief/Surge Relief Valve. Also, we can - Resetting the existing SRV set points. - Resetting the existing control valves set points. - Changing the valve actuator. - Changing the valve types. - Trimming the source pump impeller, if possible.
