When I came to Lisbon 6 years ago, I only had six months in mind. People often envy me for living here, but they only see the sunny, tourist side. But what makes people stay, despite the challenges? Living in Lisbon means skyrocketing rents, now among the highest in Europe. In summer, the city center and beaches are overcrowded, and mass tourism has stripped much of the city’s charm. Then there’s the winter: most apartments don’t have heating, making the damp cold so uncomfortable that being outside often feels better than inside. But despite all this, some things keep you here. Maybe it’s the many viewpoints to see the city in all its glory, or that you can visit the beach from February to October. A glass of port with a Pastel de Bacalhau – and a Pastel de Nata – can make even the worst day better. By evening, you sit under the Ponte 25 de Abril, watching the sun set behind the Cristo-Statue, or head to another viewpoint – there are plenty. It’s these little moments – sunsets by the water, the smell of freshly baked Pastéis de Nata, or the sound of the Atlantic – that make life what it is. Lisbon has a charm that you can only truly understand if you’ve experienced it by yourself. Maybe only six months were planned – but it seems that Lisbon had its own plans... #lisbon #expatsinlisbon #culturalexchange #personalgrowth

Let us further analyse the events that took place in Barcelona over the recent weekend and the underlying reasons behind them. On Saturday, July 6th, 2024, residents of Barcelona engaged in protests against tourists, wielding water pistols as a form of demonstration. Barcelona, known globally as a premier destination in Spain, boasts a rich tapestry of cultural offerings, architectural marvels, and culinary delights. The city plays host to a myriad of international events and is home to iconic landmarks like the Sagrada Familia cathedral and Gaudi’s architectural wonders, as well as a renowned stadium that draws sports enthusiasts from all corners of the globe. The allure of Barcelona has led to a surge in tourism, attracting visitors from diverse backgrounds and interests. However, this influx of tourists has given rise to challenges such as over-tourism and overcrowding, much to the dismay of the locals. Consequently, the city has witnessed a number of notable changes, including skyrocketing rent prices that make living in the city center more affordable than its outskirts, a spike in criminal activities targeting unsuspecting tourists, and a growing non-Spanish population drawn by the city's appeal and opportunities. The issue of over-tourism in Barcelona underscores the need for responsible management of tourism and an emphasis on sustainability. In light of these challenges, it is imperative to explore solutions that strike a balance between preserving the city's cultural heritage and ensuring the well-being of its residents.

This Historic City In Mexico Is A Favourite Among Locals — Here's How To Visit Here's where to stay, eat, and play in Mérida, Mexico home to interesting museums, bustling markets, and a buzzing nightlife by MEAGAN DRILLINGER for Travel + Leisure . . . Old-world glamour meets an earthy ethos in Mérida, one of my favourite cities in Mexico. I first dipped my toe into Mérida during a solo backpacking trip in 2017. Back then, the city was not yet a “rising destination,” and was still a far cry from the beach hot spots that dominate the tourist scene. Mérida is an interesting melange of cultures. It was one of the most important Mayan areas in Mesoamerica, but centuries of colonisation built elaborate Spanish cathedrals, homes, and palaces directly on top of, and in some cases using stones from, Mayan architecture. It is one of Mexico’s oldest European-settled cities, with the Spanish arriving in the 16th century, and it also has a strong Middle Eastern influence due to an influx of Lebanese immigrants during the Ottoman occupation. .
