It is not that you develop a “reputation sensitivity “ because you are a police leader. It is because the personality traits of those selected to become police leaders tend to have that sensitivity, regardless of gender. I had a different personality trait so had “approval sensitivity”. I have learnt to adapt and help others adapt now because I retrained on leaving and gained some specific knowledge we now share in Mindsmith Thinking. Leaders do not select themselves nor are they “their personality trait”. They can adapt if the system of selection deemed it necessary or they were aware of the importance of developing other attributes. With reputation sensitivity comes target sensitivity. They don’t make the govt targets and they don’t create the system that promotes that focus over purpose. This constant condemnation has become a theme. It is so prevalent even from some ex senior officers, we have to ask the question what is the reason so many of those criticising have exactly the same insight? Let me give a relevant observation. The focus of leadership is on task, strategy, managing threat and harm, and delivering targets. Why is allignment or creating culture consistent with aspirations absent from their development?

I wrote this piece for Blue Line Magazine in 2022, but its message is equally important today: #LeadershipMatters in policing. 𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗙 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲 to do their job, and in Western societies, police powers come from those very same people. • 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁, police officers may lose their powers • 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁, people stop helping to solve crime • 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁, people are less likely to comply with police demands The good news is that there's a win-win way to rebuild that trust, and it starts with building better #PoliceLeaders
