Summer Internship Diaries with Pranav 🌟
Part 4: How to Prepare for Product Management Roles
1) Building a Strong Foundation
Start with the Basics: Begin by watching introductory videos on product management. PM School on YouTube is an excellent resource for beginners, offering insights into the role of a PM, key responsibilities, and essential skills.
Understand PM Frameworks: Get acquainted with critical PM frameworks like CIRCLES, RICE, and Lean Canvas. These frameworks will be your guiding tools during case interviews and real-world problem-solving scenarios.
2) Deep Dive into Product Management Concepts
Exponent for Product Management: Once you’re comfortable with the basics, deepen your knowledge by exploring resources on Exponent. Exponent provides comprehensive lessons on various PM topics, interview preparation, and mock interview experiences.
Start with a solid foundation by reading casebooks like those from SPJIMR, IIM B, or IIM A. Begin with one type of case—such as Product Design—read 4-5 cases, and then practice with a friend using additional resources from IIM L or FMS. Focus on covering all six key case types: Product Design, Product Improvement, Product Launch, Pricing Strategy, Metrics and KPIs, and Root Cause Analysis. Build your basics in 15-30 days depending on your time, and ensure consistent practice to refine your approach. Start with guesstimates as well practice 1-2 cases on side with case studies.
Step 3: Advance Your Skills with Real-World Scenarios
Practice from IIM A,B and L case books.
Mock Interviews and Feedback: Engage in mock interviews with peers or mentors using these case studies to simulate real-world scenarios.
Step 4: Apply Your Knowledge
Real-world Application: Engage in product critique exercises, build a portfolio of case solutions, and continuously iterate on your approach.
Next up in the series, I will discuss preparation strategies for cracking FMCG roles at top companies. Stay tuned and follow for regular updates!
