Having heard enough about why it's so hard to SQL databases horizontally, I decided to dig in deeper. Most of the Legacy SQL Db's are not termed as Distributed SQL & could not be scaled horizontally, but why ? 🤔 Think of the most common and must required functional features of a SQL server 💾 - ACID support (Atomic, Consistent, Isolation, Durability) - Foreign Keys - Joins Try to now think of achieving these properties on a horizontally scaled SQL server using techniques like Sharding, and you will start to realise how it starts to become a nightmare. The SQL databases that offer such capabilities while guaranteeing no compromise with ACID support, are usually termed as Distributed SQL. 🚀 Few examples such as: - Google Cloud Spanner - YugaByte (Distributed POSTGRES SQL) - Cockroach DB ( Distributed SQL) Cockroach Labs 's Cockroach Db is a unique Distributed SQL that provides - Open Source (No vendor lock-in such as with Spanner) - Provides highest level of transaction Isolation i.e Serializable by default. - Distributed - Utilises RAFT consensus protocol - Smoothly operates OLTP workloads. - Geo-replication - Cluster healing capabilities
