One of the rewarding aspects of helping companies achieve #FSMA Rule 204 #traceability compliance are the, “Oh, that’s how we actually do it?” moments when leading them through a #Discovery exercise in one of their facilities. I’m just finishing up two weeks of conducting discovery exercise visits of two customers doing Food Traceability List (FTL) products. Often the warehouse manager and staff are quite aware of the various work-arounds that have been put in place over prior years to ensure products move rapidly and accurately. Senior leaders should join the discovery exercise to see what is actually happening, e.g., the amount of extra manual work, the additional opportunities to introduce errors into their #WMS and the bending over backwards to accommodate the complexities introduced by their suppliers. All of these negative aspects are highlighted when simply looking to ensure product shows up with #KDEs, are captured and stored, and can leave the facility with KDE's and a FSMA 204 Traceability Lot Code (TLC). The accuracy, efficiency and speed of product flow from manufacturer to retailer is something we take for granted. This is clearly not the case when a manufacturer looks only 1-tier back to their upstream. The speed is of course paramount. Efficiency and accuracy are lacking in almost all cases.

There's much to consider when choosing a supplier. This can be done through working with international suppliers (FSVP), which regulatory requirements must be considered, and the critical role of hazard analysis to preemptively identify risks. In tomorrow's session, led by Sara Jane Bellocchi, you will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn how to identify suitable suppliers in a crowded market.
