Given that nuclear power is the most effective way of removing most greenhouse gases (GHG) from the energy supply while preserving environment, health, and a sound foundation for economic growth, let’s hope that the understanding of this increases to the extent that it trumps older irrational fears. Climate-policy-makers insist on the urgency of reducing GHG emissions to net zero by 2050. There will be a better chance of achieving that goal if the time-consuming regulation surrounding the construction of new nuclear reactors is reduced to a level compatible with a realistic assessment of their risks rather than paranoia. Given the expensive subsidies and additional grid elements required to deploy the alternative “renewables only” approach, the fiscal outlook and economic well-being of nations, especially the poor, depend on the proven deployment of nuclear energy.

Humanity’s survival is threatened by two looming dangers: 𝐧𝐮𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞. While nuclear war is a deliberate and preventable act—leaders can choose not to press the button—climate change is far more insidious. It unfolds quietly, steadily, and outside the control of any single individual or government. Unlike a catastrophic strike halted in an instant, climate change advances day by day, fueled by countless global contributors. Vast economic interests, measured in trillions of dollars, have a stake in maintaining the status quo. Many of these beneficiaries resist meaningful reforms, resorting to denial and misinformation to confuse the public and delay action. Yesterday the Regional SDG Forum began in Geneva, I spoke on behalf of civil society of the UNECE countries at the round table on #SDG13 (climate change): - about COP29 in Azerbaijan, - non-acceptance of nuclear energy as an alternative, - the importance of including vulnerable groups in decision-making on climate change, and generally studying how climate change affects vulnerable groups, - implementation of the Paris Agreement in the context of National Adaptation Plans and ambitious NDCs - innovative climate financing and other points. With only 6 years left until the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, it is time for all of us (especially representatives of States) to once again read what is written in the document and simply start implementing it. It's simple. You can watch my intervention from 02.41.00: https://lnkd.in/e9rcKmBm #RFSD2024 #sdgbelarus

To achieve SDGs for present and future generations we must urgently address lack of political will, armed conflicts and corporate lobbying

There are two major manmade threats faced in this world to all life, namely, environmental degradation due to rapid industrialization causing pollution and global warming and fear of potential complete destruction of the planet Earth due to mass scale production and use of the nuclear weapons in wars and the harmful effects of their radioactive emissions.

From Paris Agreement to Nuclear Nightmare: Have We Lost Our Way? Nuclear Winter vs. Global Warming: Are We Fighting the Wrong Battle? The Ultimate Paradox: Saving the World by Destroying It? A Mushrooming Threat: Does the Paris Agreement Matter When Nuclear Spending Explodes? ☢️📈 This chart paints a grim picture: global spending on nuclear weapons is on the rise, with the US and UK leading the spending spree, which according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), reached a staggering $2.2 trillion globally in 2022. While the world rallies to combat climate change under the Paris Agreement, this surge in spending raises troubling questions: Misplaced Priorities: Are we so focused on hypothetical future threats that we're neglecting the clear and present danger of climate change? Broken Promises: How can nations claim to care about environmental protection while simultaneously investing in weapons of mass destruction? Opportunity Cost: Imagine if those billions were redirected towards clean energy, climate adaptation, or poverty reduction. What kind of world could we create? Perhaps it's time for a serious reality check. Are we truly committed to a sustainable future, or are these climate pledges mere lip service while we continue to fund our own destruction? #NuclearSpending #ClimateCrisis #ParisAgreement #MisplacedPriorities #TimeForChange #Weaponry #World #PlanetEarth
