In 2002, Am J Prev Med says in, End of Life is a public health issue, "It is logical that public health should embrace the end of life as an area worthy of study and intervention. After all, the end of life has three characteristics of other public health priorities: high burden, major impact, and a potential for preventing the suffering associated with illness. In 2020, JAMA says, Dying Poor in the US - Disparities in End of life care; " the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has focused attention on stark disparities in the US, with higher rates of infections and deaths among lower-income populations and communities of color. In 2024 is End of Life Care still a public health issue?

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are social, environmental, and economic factors that can influence (positive or negative) and impact the health of individuals and communities at large. These factors contribute to health disparities and inequities. For example, limited access to affordable and nutritious foods raises the risk of conditions like heart disease, diabetes, etc. To adequately address these types of public health emergencies/disparities, New Mexico's local and trusted health hubs (County & Tribal Health Councils) work with communities, local governments, and organizations to identify community health improvement priorities (CHIP) and together barriers (SDOH) and serve communities in a meaningful and effective way. Stay tuned this week to learn more about the ways New Mexico's Health Councils work to improve local health! #SDoH #SocialDetermnantsOfHealth #NewMexicoStrong #PublicHealth #HealthCouncils #CulturalHealthCare New Mexico Department of Health

Public health is more than the physical or mental health of a community. It also focuses on the social and economic inequities that drive health disparities. Different zip codes can have vastly different health outcomes and life expectancies, even for those that live minutes apart. We recognize the power communities have on health. It’s why we work with healthcare stakeholders to create solutions tailored to each community.
