What's better than a business created to solve a societal problem? A business that solves two. XO bikes is a bike shop with a difference. Firstly it sells refurbished bikes (mostly unclaimed bikes donated by the Met Police ) which avoids tonnes of material wastage - a great sustainability story. Secondly, they employ prison leavers, re-training them as bike mechanics. That's a huge deal because 75% of UK businesses won’t employ ex-offenders so many go on to re-offend. Creating a vicious cycle. Thanks to Kingsley James for telling me about them. Check 'em out:

Recyke Y’Bike is a fantastic project in Newcastle. They provide a free bike, helmet, lock and lights to a range of community groups, including to: 🚲Children 🚲Families struggling financially 🚲Refugees and people seeking asylum In fact, since 2020 they’ve given away 1055 bikes – and counting! That’s not all... They also host a range of regular, free workshops that empower people in different communities by teaching valuable skills on how to fix a bike. Not only do the workshops give people the practical skills to maintain their own bikes cheaply, but they also provide transferable skills which can improve their lives socially and economically, such as: 🚲Improved self-confidence 🚲A sense of purpose and self-worth 🚲Social skills 🚲A sense of community 🚲Sessions for young people But, they now need your help! The cost of living crisis has led to a huge increase in demand for their services, paired with increased costs such as rent and fuel. Meanwhile, we’re also facing increased overhead costs such as rent, heating and fuel. They are asking for money to keep them going during the colder months and help them find some stability whilst they restructure and develop new income streams. Find out all about their incredible project by following the link: 🔗 https://bit.ly/3YnPkyu #newcastle #cycling @recykeybike #crowdfunder

What a good film! Definitely worth a watch. Bike waste is incredible: Tyres take 50-80 years to decompose in landfill; inner tubes take 1000 years. Bikes are being 'built to fail' - 'it's easier to rebuild a 1980s bike than one from 2017'. Recycling is not the answer (uses energy, creates its own waste) although designing in recyclability would still be an improvement. Instead consider, as this film does, how to reduce and reuse materials. Think about the waste hierarchy where we first ask ourselves if we need something new at all, then if we do, how we can reduce or reuse materials to prevent waste. Bike reuse in Scotland sees skilled mechanics give donated bikes a second life. Charities and social enterprises use these circular practices to keep bikes and materials in use for as long as possible and they need your support - donate a bike, go and buy a quality-assured bike, volunteer in their passionate teams. We often find ourselves pedaling around as unpaid ambassadors of an overpriced system. True style is something entirely different. My advice is to invest wisely in quality, durable, comfortable, and high-performing bikes. A bike should be an extension of yourself, not just a status symbol. #CyclingAdvice #InvestInQuality #TrueCyclists

Banning a (sustainable) mode of transport for some user's poor parking and isolated bad driver behaviour, my WORD, well if that's all it takes let's just ban DRIVING as well then shall we?!?! No, we don't do that, like driving and vehicles, we need to make sure the actions of a few don't sully the experience for all. "Parking bays, and resources to remove incorrectly parked or abandoned bikes (vehicles)" are all very normal solutions to manage unsustainable transport, so let's try a little harder with sustainable modes, hey? https://lnkd.in/e4NadpzG Lime

Weekly Round Up ⤵ 🗞️ After lasts weeks news that the Global Mobility Industry is predicted to be worth an Eye-Watering $1.1 Trillion it seems that the it isn't getting #privateequity players interested with PE Investment set to decline for the second year in a row according to S&P Global. Kersten Heineke puts it to the wants and demands of investors changing from growth (at all costs) to profitability 📈 💰 It hasn't stopped Luup raising €18.2M taking its total to €100M or Donkey Republic announcing private placement of new shares to raise funds for expansion. 🇺🇸 The US market continues to go from strength to strength within system expansions in Las Vegas, PeaceHealth Rides in Eugene and Springfield hitting 1M rides and Capital Bikeshare breaking ridership records for the FIFTH straight month! 🇫🇯 Bikeshare has made it as far as Fiji with the Qaqi Mai system planning to pilot the capital, Suva, in 2025. 🤯 Bike infrastructure studies (lots of them) show bike lanes don't cause congestion BUT make vehicle travel faster, improve road safety and bring more revenue to local business - who would of thought 💭 Did I miss something? If there was other news worth sharing in the #micromobility sector please share it in the comments 🙏🏻 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eisK-s33

Trendwatching: Cargobikes are starting to grow out of niche delivery. London city Cargobike use grew 73% YoY 2022-2023, and 63% citywide. Sure, given; a +73% figure is easily attained when only 200 companies use cargobikes. Yet, this "easy" growth figure belies a trend in adoption, solidified by studies (scroll back in my feed) done by and with TfL. These concluded that 20% of all van journeys can profitably be replaced by cargobikes by 2030. For reference, cargo vans now ride over 50% more miles than they did 20 years ago, with 450 Million packages delivered in London per year (about one per resident per week)
