This summer's heatwaves have often brought nearly unbearable temperatures to Hungary, with city dwellers being hit the hardest. In urban areas, temperatures can be significantly higher than in townships with larger green surfaces, making daily life even more challenging. Our firm, as a contracted partner of the European Space Agency (ESA), has been developing a service which, using satellite Earth observation data, can support both local and international municipalities in their efforts to create cooler and more liveable urban areas in the near future. Local authorities and investors have yet to find a complex solution to reduce the negative impacts of climate change at the municipal level. HeatScape Resolve is a simulation method that leverages satellite data to support measures aimed at reducing the urban heat island effect. 🕰️It’s HELCOM Through History time! 🕰️   The HELCOM Second Holistic Assessment on the Ecosystem Health of the Baltic Sea (HOLAS II) was published in 2017. HOLAS II gave an update on the overall state of ecosystem health in the Baltic Sea. For the period from 2011-2016 the assessment tracks the achievement on the goals of the Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP) and is developed so that the results can support reporting under the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) by those Contracting Parties to the Helsinki Convention that are also EU member states. #HELCOMThroughHistory

Investing in People at Place: The Key to Sustainable Ecosystem Restoration in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Page 5 in the Guardian last week The recent recognition of the Tākaka Hill Biodiversity Group Trust as a finalist for the 2024 Ministry of Primary Industries BioHeritage Challenge Community Award is a testament to the crucial role that community-led initiatives play in protecting and restoring the biodiversity of Aotearoa, New Zealand. It highlights the value of local knowledge and community connections in safeguarding ecosystems. The Trust's holistic approach to ecosystem restoration, including pest control, native plant propagation, predator trapping, restoration planting, and scientific research, showcases the impactful contributions of grassroots efforts to conservation. However, the sustainability of relying solely on volunteers for this work is a concern, emphasizing the need for adequate funding support. Investing in community groups like the Tākaka Hill Biodiversity Group Trust empowers them to continue their essential conservation work for the benefit of future generations. The Trust's 50-year strategy exemplifies the dedication and vision of local communities in preserving Aotearoa's biodiversity. It is crucial to recognize that sustainable ecosystem protection requires more than volunteer efforts and to prioritize supporting community-led initiatives with the necessary resources. The success of the Trust serves as an inspiring example for other communities in Aotearoa to follow suit.

Dear Editor, It was so discouraging to see the Speaker of the House and a handful of congressmen parade over to the Senate yesterday to present the articles of impeachment brought against Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.  Everyone concedes that there is zero chance that the Senate will vote to convict the Secretary of any "High Crimes and Misdemeanors.  As a matter of fact, the Senate seems determined to simply dismiss the initiative without a vote. Meanwhile, the border problem continues. It is especially sad to see the energy invested in the symbolic gesture of impeaching Mayorkas when these same politicians at the eleventh hour scuttled compromise legislation that would have provided some relief to the issues at the border. It is generally accepted that the compromise was abandoned at the urging of former President Trump who wanted to preserve the border as a big issue in his campaign. To the extent the border problem was partially addressed in bipartisan legislation, it would lessen the impact of a key campaign issue he is counting on.  This kind of gamesmanship must stop. We are the ones who suffer while symbolic gestures overtake substance. We "Boomers" remember the days of national politics when, often, half a loaf was chosen over none. The art of compromise was an essential skill required of our national leaders. Why has compromise become a dirty word?  Many attribute the change to the birth of the internet and the polarization that has followed. Sound bites and dramatic messaging have overtaken responsible leadership.  This new era is, in part, our own fault as we allow appeals to our emotions and anger to be more effective than appeals to the "better angels of our nature".  This was the precise message of President Lincoln in his first inaugural Address, as he spoke to our hopelessly divided nation in 1861. The kind of division we faced 163 years ago can only be avoided by electing leaders who are rational, fair and who appeal to the "better angels of our nature". Robert Sturges Coral Gables, FL

For a few years, the Baltic Sea has been my focus of curiosity and research. It all started when I worked on the Baltic Sea mission within Latvia’s national branding strategy. Long story there. 📚 But what was the reason for my curiosity? 🤝 Well, I wanted to understand how and why (or why not) people relate to climate issues. Because if you dig deeper, it’s all about human behaviour, and though it is a very complex issue, there are ways how to work with it. 🌊 Also water, oceans, and rivers are quite abstract and multilayered topics with so many factors involved. I began researching, talking with researchers, also from Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre who carry out truly valuable work, met fishermen, individual change-makers, attended different insightful events around the Baltic Sea by Race For The Baltic, and connected with other foundations BalticWaters and in the process engaged youth (like in this video with my dear niece Elza) who are very aware of what is happening with the world around us, and they truly care. This work is ongoing. As a result, I have started to collect these stories, which I aim to develop into a project "Portraits of the Baltic Sea". . But, as they say, step by step. My approach? - To focus on people, as it will help to relate, engage and inspire. * People behind the issues. * People who are taking action. * People who are being affected.
