A great article from Harvard Business Review that brings to light a problem I see in many organizations' warehouse transformation strategies: Designing automation systems with the sole goal of going lights out when there are attainable, and in many cases, more effective hybrid systems. A significant portion of warehouse operations would benefit from leveraging the flexibility of humans while augmenting those workers with robotic systems. Not replacing, elevating. These human+automation options are usually less expensive than the infrastructure heavy, "full" solutions and can provide even greater efficiency gains when planned correctly.

2023 heading into 2024 has shown us that businesses urgently seek robotic and automation solutions within short timeframes, pressuring suppliers to expedite processes. This trend highlights the urgency for faster planning and execution in automation projects. Due to challenges like labor shortages. Many aim to implement these solutions within six months or less, putting pressure on suppliers to shorten lead times. Lead times range from 6 to 30 weeks, which is much better than what we saw post-pandemic with disruptions causing delays of over a year. The main point here is that planning is crucial. Business need to involve goal setting, business case preparation, and supplier selection.
