Happy one hundredth birthday, Shirley Chisholm! Born on this day in 1924, Chisholm was the first Black woman in Congress (1968) and the first Black person to seek the nomination for president of the United States from one of the two major political parties (1972). After retiring from Congress, she became a professor of sociology and anthropology at Mount Holyoke College, where she continued to inspire bold leaders and boundless learners to make a better world. Shirley was a Census taker and learned so much about her community going directly door to door. She built her reputation as a no nonsense leader and ran against some serious misogynists of her time. “Unbought and unbossed” was her motto. Unfortunately history just repeats itself but Shirley remains an inspiration. She was everything. Bold, unapologetic and a real change maker. My shero!!
One semester I had the privilege and honor to take an 8 am class given by Representive Chisholm. Best early morning ever!
If in NYC, there is a wonderful exhibit on her at the Museum of the City of New York. It’s up through July 2025 and well worth the visit. https://www.mcny.org/exhibition/changing-face-democracy
Brilliant, amazing role model!! I was so humbled to have her as a professor back in the 80’s!
She spoke at my graduation, class of 81! She was inspiring & I was in awe of her. Truly sorry I graduated missed having her as a professor at MHC. 🤩
Interacted with her at MHC in 81. Interactee with her office as a volunteer high school student in Brooklyn. She was always clear, focused, honest and bold!
Happy Birthday Shirley Chisholm, you were birthed on Earth for a reason, you lived and acted it. 4 of many POSSIBLE reasons the USA have not had a female President. 1. White Supremacy 2. Male Supremacy 3. SOME females who support Male Supremacy 4. In 2024, The new AI with Voting
Happy Birthday and thank you
I was privileged to bask in this lady's teaching and mentoring for one glorious year: I took one of her courses, and interviewed her!
