2024 is a year of milestones for me! I turn 40 soon, but I celebrated 20 years in Recruitment last week. Meaning half of my life I've dedicated to this one industry. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of connecting talented professionals with their dream roles, partnering with businesses to build exceptional teams, and witnessing countless success stories. Each interaction, each placement, and each negotiation has shaped my passion for this field. Reflecting on this journey, I’m grateful for the relationships forged, the challenges overcome, and the growth achieved. 10, 20 , 30 years at the same company and last day is 12/31... I was asked to speak in front of a group of employees yesterday at a company that will be shutting down operations come 12/31/2024. I represented CLASSIC RECRUITING, LLC. The company has been a staple in the area for over 75 years. Talk about commitment, these employees were perfect examples of people that enjoyed their jobs. They felt secure, but unfortunately the company needed to go in another direction because of financial and operational purposes. I spoke not only about how to write and build a resume, I spoke about the road ahead and what to expect when being let go from a company. It's an emotional roller-coaster that I was once part of years ago. I went over what to expect on the first week of unemployment and the weeks that follow. you have to remember, IT WASN'T YOUR FAULT. - We discussed how to network and who to ask for assistance for another possibility in work. - Went over how their next opportunity could be a better opportunity. - How to do your homework when applying at a company and interviewing ✨ Our futures are not guaranteed, it is our responsibility to plan as much as we can for future detours in life and within our careers. ✳️ You can show up early and stay late everyday but it is out of your control if one day the company decides to go in another direction. Within your career you have to be your own entrepreneur even when you work for a company, you need to plan for the future, you need to evaluate yourself on performance and what you want to accomplish in the future. Treat yourself like an employee. Culture, Recruitment Process, Hire-quality...It could be any or all. 😟 But apart from these, there is a subtle yet very powerful aspect: 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗴𝗮𝗽! Visit any induction program, you will find the room bubbling with energy! 🔸 New job, fresh energy, big ideas. Raring to go change everything. 🔸 Meet them after a month, you will see a different picture. 🔶 Same people. But that energy is noticeably missing! I've seen this story play out too many times. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱? Essentially, the new joiners don't know how much the existing team knows. The existing team doesn't know what value the new joiner brings in. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵? 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲-𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 1. Newbies feel unheard. 2. Veterans feel unappreciated 3. Enthusiasm meets tradition, and both sides dig in their heels. Love this perspective that as an advisor you have Subrata Kabiraj! It's a culture thing and assimilation has a model that Edgar Schein talked about... .. Assimilation can be speeded up, following the process that Prof Schein recommends.. .... In all cases, it is like a hockey stick curve.. The first line to the New Staff sounds a bit divisive and a bit crushing... This may snub the curious minds... Try talking about it from an intergroup communication perspective (New Staff to the Tenured ones, Company/Leaders/Enablers in HR, Fin, IT, Admin, Sec, Legal, etc to the New staff)! And one can discover lots of interesting conversations. The Groupon CEO once said that, no one but the CEO must lead new employee orientation programs! When I attended a new employee orientation program during the remote work mandate due to Covid restrictions, 13 people joined virtually for a 2 day long session and 11 of them kept their videos turned off, some presenters didn't even come on video, some were late by 45 mins and new staff kept waiting. The HR guy who was leading the induction, telling everyone how to succeed in this company was someone who was a Covid time joiner and had never visited the office, was yet to see his first performance review process. When I asked him how many hours of crucial conversations he had with senior leaders about company vision, priorities and talent and capabilities, he had none to mention... And such folks tell you how to succeed in the firm.. Q-Why was he sent to run such an important program, when they had tenured HR leaders galore? A- As I said, it's a culture thing.. 😄
