This week, our #CharitEpulse trio James Saunders, Charles Mesquita, and Catherine Rustomji delve into the implications of the budget on the charity sector and more: - National insurance increase: With a £1.4 billion rise in Employer National Insurance Contributions for charities, does this immediately signal a neglect of the sector despite the stated intentions of the new ‘Covenant’? - Charity tax reliefs: HMRC’s plans to restrict tax reliefs: a necessary safeguard or an overreaction? - Whistle-blowing protections: What does the latest tribunal ruling mean for trustees? - ‘Trustee crisis’: The National Council for Voluntary Organisations has highlighted a shortage of charity trustees. Is this truly a crisis, or could it be diverting attention from more pressing challenges? - Refusing donations: The Chartered Institute of Fundraising’s stance on donation refusals prompts a discussion on the ethical implications of inconsistent decision-making based on a charity’s values and morals. #MooreKingstonSmith #CharitySector #NationalInsuranceIncrease #CharityTaxReliefs #Whistleblowing #Trustees #CharityDonations

Brilliant new podcast / concept from Third Sector that will really get you thinking (and may make your brain hurt). Are we in the sector getting the balance right between serving an immediate need versus tackling underlying causes and creating meaningful change on a fundamental level? Should charities ultimately be aiming for longevity or extinction? Big questions for a Monday night!
“When you’re seeing the scale of need and the scale of response you have to question: what is going on here?” The first episode of our six-part podcast documentary, The End of Charity, is out now. In "The food bank era”, Lucinda Rouse hears from Rhodri Davies, founder and director of Why Philanthropy Matters, about the roots of charity in Victorian philanthropy and why these origins are problematic for charities tackling social problems today. And Emma Revie explains why she feels The Trussell Trust should be dismantled at the earliest possible opportunity. Peter Baines talks about how this is a forever-evolving process with a reassessment over past decisions and what could have been done differently. With less than a week until GivingTuesday---with $3.1 billion dollars donated in only one day in 2022---what are the key factors that motivate people to donate? Motivations DO differ from other financial decisions like buying products or investing in the stock market. And in the modern age of eroding trust, how is charitable effectiveness actually assessed? Some charities are astronomically more effective than others. Psychological research can be the key that helps donors understand their own motivations and the eternal dilemma of the “head vs. heart.” On the latest Money to Give podcast episode, learn from Harvard researcher Matthew Coleman, PhD about the power of motivation and how it impacts giving today! You know, all monies donated when going through bandcamp goes to my select genuine charities. These charities are not your regular institutionalised and commercialised set ups. I choose specific ones that I believe are in dire need. You could get the whole album and listen anytime without using your internet subscription. You could do a deal and purchase the whole album, or be selective and just select a song. 15% of what you spend goes to bandcamp and a fee percentage goes to paypal. This kind of support is more realistic than listening to Spotify, which only gives .0003 cents per listen. This kind of music is not for everyone. It is for those who take time to listen and hopefully learn. It can also be entertaining just to listen to our music. Discover! Own the songs! Listen anytime. https://lnkd.in/guzP-mTV Looking forward to your support! <iframe scrolling="no" style="border: 0;width: 100%;height: 50px;" src="https://lnkd.in/gPxpiP5f"></iframe>

Single cash or RG? There is a third way How many meetings have you sat in to debate single cash versus a regular gift? Everyone wants the RG of course, which makes the ROI much better. But getting RG sign-ups is not the easiest ask to go out with, so single cash has obvious attractions but does need a strong re-activation strategy. It’s a choice you shouldn’t always make. I’ve written before about the subscription model which fundraisers could be looking at. And one of the key marketing features of the subscription model is the trial. Look at Spotify, at Netflix, at most streamers. The usual offer is a trial for 3 months. There is a labyrinth of variations on this process, especially at the back end, but the essence of the offer is that it’s easier to get sign-ups and once signed up, the experience of the product should take the triallist over the 3 month period and convert into a regular subscriber. I can’t see what fundraisers wouldn’t adopt this system. You’d ask for a 3 month DD, which automatically cancels at the end of the period. This is one of the areas where you can test all sorts of variations, especially auto renewal unless cancelled, but I’m not sure fundraisers should start at this point. Once signed up, you’d give your ‘temporary’ RG a high level of engagement, via video, emails and what have you and as expiry approached you would have to work hard. But you’d have had 3 months income and even if they didn’t convert at that moment, you have a good prospect. And you’d need the story to tell. Emergency appeals would be straightforward to offer the 3 month RG for. Other, longer term asks could also benefit: there’s no good reason why you shouldn’t explain why there’s a trial – a chance to see what a difference you’re making. I’m not aware that any fundraiser has tried this. Be delighted to hear otherwise. Hopefully so would everyone else! #fundraising #donations #charity
