I just did a presentation comparing the two frameworks for psychological safety that I use most frequently in my work, so I thought I would turn it into a blog as well. If you're wanting to do some culture work and you aren't sure where to start, here are a couple of different ways of approaching it. #psychologicalsafety #workplace culture https://lnkd.in/efGYXVGk

Psychological safety is a big topic these days. While in some cases it can be very clear when a workplace isn’t psychologically safe, sometimes those clues are much more subtle. Here are a few small things to keep an eye on: 👉 Everyone always agrees with the boss. Do you notice that the manager sets the tone and there are no disagreements or second opinions shared? This could be a sign that people are afraid or unwilling to speak up and share their ideas. 👉 Nobody speaks up in meetings when asked for input, and there is a lack of new ideas generally. Flourishing workplaces that are psychologically safe encourage people to share their ideas and feel they will be listened to. 👉 There is a general culture of ‘good vibes only’ and a constant pressure to be happy and positive all the time. Psychological safety isn’t just about being positive all the time – it is the ability to have courageous conversations and hold space for people to be their whole selves. 👉 Another clue can be a reluctance to take responsibility for mistakes or misunderstandings and shifting blame to others. If any of these sound familiar, it might be time to assess the level of psychological safety in your team. Shiftbalance has been supporting different teams in addressing the elephant in the room in a constructive way. Feeling safe at work is key to your team's well-being and retention. So pay attention to silent colleagues! They may just know where that elephant is. 🐘 Photo by MARK ADRIANE on Unsplash #psychologicalsafety #toxicworkplaces

Why Workplaces Struggle with Psychological Safety If psychological safety is so important, why do workplaces rarely have it, at least 100% of the time? It has to do with how human brains are wired. Most people struggle with fundamental attribution error, where we assign blame to the external situation when behavior is our fault yet associate someone else’s negative behavior with a flaw in their character. It’s thinking, “I made a mistake, I am human after all” while thinking, “they made a mistake, they are flawed.” How to Assess Your Team’s Psychological Safety If you are curious how psychologically safe your workplace is, consider asking your employees anonymously. Ask them how often they observe or engage in these behaviors on a scale of one to 10 (one being “never,” 10 being “always”). 1. Feel safe speaking up about a challenging issue 2. See others share dissenting opinions at work 3. Have candid conversations with your manager about challenges 4. Admit your mistakes 5. Acknowledge your weaknesses 6. Share failures as a way to learn and grow 7. Embrace different perspectives 8. Openly ask for feedback 9. See constructive feedback as critical to learning 10. Get constructive feedback from people on your team 11. Hear reality vs. optimism 12. Learn about problems vs. progress 13. Focus on divergent thinking vs. convergent thinking 14. Hear “I need help” vs. “It’s all good” #psychologicalsafety #changemanagement #why #mistake #feeback #forbes https://lnkd.in/e8jsXbRx

As we come to the end of #learningatWorkWeek and #MentalHealthWeek I came across this article on Psychological Safety in the Workplace and it resonated with me when I reflect on the impact of work, over the years, on my mental health and the reflective learning that came from it. Do we focus enough on Psychological Safety in our workplaces? I’m looking for case studies of good (and bad practice) for research I’m doing at University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
