As Mekong countries plan more water infrastructure projects, stories like Itaipu's, and other joint efforts in the Columbia River and Senegal River, show how potential conflicts can be transformed into cooperation through equitable cost and benefit sharing. Could the Mekong countries take a page out of these books and work together to achieve a similarly high level of cooperation? Read our op-ed: https://bit.ly/3SPzbQp

The Lobito Corridor is the first strategic Global Infrastructure and Investment economic corridor launched by US president at the G7 Summit in Japan in 2023, under the flagship G7 Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment initiative. One of the most important infrastructure projects that would connect the West Coast Lobito Port in Angola, DRC and Zambia. The railway will be for both passengers and freight. With this new infrastructure will come economic development opportunities - agriculture, renewable energy, more efficient transport of minerals, etc.

Africa's Big Elections: AUC and AfDB Focus - PIDA: Our False Start and the Urgency of Recovery Time for chastening. Deep introspection. We had a false start (say, weak start) with PIDA. We followed the configuration of agency instead of the reality of complexity. Agency before structure. How? PIDA was framed on the sectors of infrastructure (transport, energy, ICT, cross-boundary water, and a mild allowance for cross-sectoral issues). Now, those sectors represent crystallisation of agency (how people are organised). That primacy of agency was a big mistake. We should have asked: What are our challenges? Consequently, we should have framed PIDA on the challenges (our complexity) with agency following (secondary). Had we done so, we would have created two crucial entities: 1. An Africa infrastructure observatory (a meaningful one): Asking, what's going on in this space? What's emerging? It would actively engage with our universities, the few think tanks, and the broader world. 2. An Africa planning board: Asking, how do we control this space? How do we steer it? It would bring the national planning authorities together. It would augment APRM. Look, our national planning authorities are mere project monitoring units. That's pathetic. They should control our complex spaces. Our aspiring leaders (AUC and AfDB): This our ground zero (how we mould our physical environment). Please peer the challenge. Our international friends (development partners): Thanks for pumping quite a bit of money (esp. EU). Now we must dive deep into our challenge of complexity. How might you help? Colleagues: Go back 15 years. Recall our meetings at the Tunis relocation office. We could have looked deeper. I could have looked deeper. I didn't understand the space. I was a leader but ignorant. The social physics was hidden from me. We should now know better. It's time for recovery. No lamenting. No shying away from reality. Let's ask the difficult questions. Let's respect the gift of time. And here are the aspiring leaders (as I know): AUC #Anil_Gayan, #Mahamoud_Ali_Youssouf, Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, EGH, #Richard_Randriamandrato AfDB: Amadou Hott, Abbas Mahamat TOLLI, Samuel Munzele Maimbo, Ms. Swazi Tshabalala, Romuald Wadagni,
Africa: Corridors as Cities The main challenges of the world reside in cities. Climate change resides in cities. And global funding resides in cities. This week Africa meets to look at the infrastructure corridors. This should be a meeting on cities. Look at the corridors as a realisation of the cities. That way, the challenge and funding will be aligned. But that's the big picture. More formally, it's the coarse-grained frame. We must look at the micro. We must frame the delivery. That's tough social physics. We must look at the interacting parts and draw a trajectory of evolution. Yes, it's tough. But we must tackle it. We cannot afford to keep swimming shallow. We cannot afford to keep talking projects and transactions, ignoring the deeper frame. I can hear: 'We have framed it already!' Retire that thought. We have never looked at PIDA as a challenge of complexity science, and it's just that. And even after sketching a frame, we must review it continually. So, delivery and framing must run in tandem. And we must remember: Corridors are cities - a guise of cities. #africa #infrastructure #pida #auda #nepad #afdb #worldbank #sustainability #complexity #climate Nardos Bekele-Thomas Amine IDRISS A. Transport infrastructure is vital to developing countries because efficient and reliable transport networks are critical for local and international trade. As climate change drives up the number of natural disasters in Africa, we revisit findings from Tanzania in 2021 which offer useful lessons for policymakers, planners and developers. 💻 Dr. Amani G. A few days ago, there was a very successful meeting between Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić and EBRD President Odil Reno-Basso during the Investment Summit on the Western Balkans in London! Partnership with EBRD is crucial for the substantial investment cycle the Government of Montenegro planned. The focus of discussions was on the construction of road infrastructure. In the next six years, Montenegro envisions building nine sections of highways and expressways and significant investments in railways, the airport, and the Port of Bar. Aligning with EBRD's key priorities, Montenegro's potential in the green sector was emphasized. The commitment to developing renewable energy sources, with a spotlight on the vast hydropower potential while adhering to environmental standards, was a key point of discussion. The meeting highlighted the commitment to a sustainable partnership. By efficiently utilizing all potentials, Montenegro aims to create a lasting impact on its development journey. The partnership with EBRD opens doors to countless opportunities and positions us at the forefront of positive change. #MontenegroDevelopment #EBRDPartnership #SustainableFuture #InvestInMontenegro #GoldenGroup
