Creativity is not supposed to be quick, easy, painless, automated, or rapid. Our toxically capitalistic culture continues to push the narrative that spending too much time solving difficult business problems is "not productive." Here's the thing - much like art, creativity is not supposed to be easy. It takes years to master, and is something that is being constantly improved on throughout your career. It's painful. It takes blood, sweat, and tears. And badass ideas take strategy, thought, and time to work through and execute in a beautiful way. Creativity and the inevitable struggle is what drives innovation. This is why we make a living doing this stuff. We are solving complex business problems through a creative lens, which connects people to businesses on an emotional level. There is no automated silver bullet or easy way out with this kind of work. Did Michelangelo set out to see how many quick 1 inch trinkets he could make out of stone to sell at local markets? No, he set out to accomplish something that no one else thought was even remotely possible. And he never stopped the lifelong quest to create deeply emotional works of art that defied human perception. How did Michelangelo learn human anatomy with more detail than anyone in the world? Well, he broke into morgues when they were closed and studied corpses for several years, multiple times every week. This led to his with hyper-realistic and precise creation of David. Of course, this example is quite intense (and I might not recommend it 😂 ) but it illustrates the level of dedication artists and creatives devote to their craft. Sure, he could have whipped out all the books he had available at the time and studied them like everyone else, and it would have saved him a lot of time and effort, but he didn't want results like everyone else. He wanted extraordinary, like nothing else on earth. When we use AI to "optimize the creative process" we lose integral pieces of the process, struggle, and pain that leaves us with groundbreaking ideas. Instead, we automate it and move forward with boilerplate fragments under the guise of productivity, or to seem "cutting edge." Big tech is pushing to eliminate the "boring" pieces in creativity, to leave more room for the "fun" pieces. This is the narrative they want creatives to buy into out of fear of "being left behind" or that they will "die if they don't adapt." It's working, and it's destroying craft as we know it. It's creating a widespread acceptance of mediocrity for the sake of productivity, completely ignoring the fact that without the life's work of tens of thousands of artists and creatives that was stolen to build these multibillion dollar data sets, AI would simply not exist. I'm all for technological advancement, but not at the expense of ethics and craft. I can support AI for science, not art. Greatness is earned, not given on a silver platter.

Can you believe it? I was involved in a Kodak photography business back in the day.  This is a photo of the big machine I sat at to develop and print rolls of film. And I was proud of the work we did, capturing memories for our customers with our high-quality cameras and film. But as technology rapidly advanced, Kodak failed to embrace the digital revolution, clinging to their outdated business model. Even though they had actually invented the first digital camera, they did not move fast enough. They ended up going bankrupt, unable to adapt to the changing landscape. Fortunately, that was a long time ago for me but it has always served as a valuable lesson for me to stay open-minded to new disruptive technology. Adapt or become obsolete!  Disrupt or be disrupt-ED! So while Kodak's story is a cautionary tale of a once-dominant company that refused to evolve, my journey has been quite the opposite. I'm now part of a dynamic, forward-thinking global community that is redefining what's possible when you combine DISRUPTIVE entrepreneurship with the latest advancements in AI, science and high tech.
