At Tesla's annual meeting in 2024, Elon Musk provided updates on the company's plans for a ride-sharing service using autonomous Tesla vehicles, known as #Robotaxis. He announced that the #Robotaxi program will be officially revealed on August 8, 2024. This service will allow Tesla owners to use their vehicles to provide ride-sharing services autonomously, potentially generating significant income while the owners are not using their cars. The #Robotaxi concept is part of Tesla's broader vision for a fully autonomous vehicle network. Musk emphasized the potential for these Robotaxis to be highly profitable due to their low operating costs, which are estimated to be around $0.18 per mile, significantly cheaper than traditional ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft. Tesla vehicles equipped with Full Self-Driving (FSD) software will be the cornerstone of this network. Although FSD currently requires driver supervision and is classified as Level 2 autonomy, Tesla aims to achieve full autonomy in the future. The company also highlighted that owners could easily add their cars to the Tesla shared fleet via a smartphone app, enabling seamless integration into the ride-sharing service. This Might Just Be The One - Tesla's FSD (full self-driving software) version 12.3 Is Doing Smooth, No Takeover Drives Over and Over: It's Ready For Wide Release. What does that mean? Soon, anyone with a Tesla car will be able to pay $199 a month to have their car drive them anywhere. This greatly reduces the burden of driving by having your car pay attention at all times and take care of driving for you. Why does that matter? At some point (I think in a couple of years), anyone with a Tesla car will be able to send out their car without a driver to take people around like an Uber or Lyft and get paid for it. Exactly how much advancement in technology is required to move forward? More important question to ask as a consumer, "would you feel safe in a car which requires very little to no human intervention?". Tesla may be a pioneer of all the great modern technologies in the automotive sphere but there's a long way to go before Musk's grand vision becomes a reality. Elon Musk has long had an affinity for self-driving vehicles, claiming they will be one of Tesla’s most important products. Despite big promises, years have gone by without cars that can, so far, drive on their own. But Musk, on a Friday afternoon, announced on X that Tesla would unveil its robotaxi on August 8. ➡️ His post was simple and included no details. “Tesla Robotaxi unveil on 8/8,” the Tesla CEO (and owner of X) posted. ➡️ Musk has said in the past that Tesla will make a car without controls for a human to use. He has also said in the past that Tesla cars equipped with Full Self-Driving Capability will, through software updates, gradually become better and better at driving. At some point, the cars will be capable of operating as fully autonomous taxis and could earn money for their owners by giving taxi rides on their own, Musk has repeatedly said. ➡️ So far, the company has passed several of Musk’s predictions for when actual self-driving would be possible.
