Done right, it offers an incredibly sustainable and accessible mobility option 🚍🥳 🌳🌬️ By sharing the journey with others, public transport drastically lowers the emissions and air pollution per passenger compared to the impact of traveling alone in a car. 👩🦯 🧑🏿👶👩🏽⚕️🦼 Public transport provides mobility options for people of all backgrounds, ensuring that no one is left behind. It can connect communities, even the smaller ones in the countryside, and create opportunities for work, education, and leisure. 🚗🚗🚗 Buses and trains move people in a highly efficient way, reducing the number of cars on the road and the resources needed to transport each person. In cities, it helps to reduce congestion, save space, and make cities more livable for everyone. 💸 Public transit boosts local economies, creating jobs, supporting businesses, and increasing property values along transit lines. Just met a young CEO from a mobility start-up at the airport and we had a great conversation about strategy and process optimization. I was inspired by how she does not own a car and instead moves around Barcelona using public transport and a bike. Today, I decided to take a small step towards sustainability by taking public transport to the airport. It may not always be perfect, but it worked for me today. As a company, we are conscious of our impact on the environment and work together with customers through condition monitoring and the entire bearing cycle to improve outcomes and reduce waste. 🌍 Sustainable transport: towards a greener and more economical mobility. Sustainable transport aims to minimize negative impacts on the environment, promote public health 🏥, and be economically viable 💰. Key actions include: 🔋Reducing emissions: Use of electric and hybrid vehicles; 🚌Energy efficiency: promoting public transport and optimizing routes; 🚗Transport sharing: encouraging carpooling and bike-sharing systems; 🚴♀️Green infrastructure: developing bike lanes and pedestrian zones. The European Union has set ambitious goals: 2030: 30 million zero-emission vehicles and doubling high-speed rail traffic 🚄. 2035: commercialization of zero-emission aircraft ✈️. 2050: all new vehicles will be zero-emission. In France, free-floating (bikes and scooters 🛴 in self-service) is gaining in popularity, offering flexibility and freedom of movement. Teleworking, reinforced by the health crisis, reduces transport usage and encourages soft mobility. World Sustainable Transport Day, celebrated on 26 November, is a special occasion to reflect and make transport safer, more efficient, more sustainable and greener. The UN General Assembly adopted the resolution to designate a UN World Sustainable Transport Day at its 77th session in May 2023. The resolution followed IRU’s initial proposal to have a dedicated World Transport Day. Sustainable transport offers a range of environmental, economic, social, and safety benefits that contribute to creating healthier and more equitable communities. Environmentally, it reduces greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and energy consumption by promoting low-carbon modes such as walking, cycling, public transit, and electric vehicles. Economically, sustainable transport lowers costs for individuals and governments by decreasing dependency on fossil fuels, reducing infrastructure maintenance expenses, and supporting efficient logistics systems. Socially, it enhances accessibility, improves public health through active mobility, and fosters inclusivity by ensuring affordable and reliable transport options for all segments of society. In terms of safety, sustainable transport can significantly reduce traffic-related crashes and fatalities. By encouraging modes like walking and cycling, which are often safer in low-traffic areas, and by promoting better-designed infrastructure, such as dedicated bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly streets, the risk of collisions decreases. Additionally, the shift towards public transport and electric vehicles, which are typically associated with fewer crashes compared to private cars, further enhances road safety. Sustainable transport systems alleviate traffic congestion, leading to fewer dangerous interactions between vehicles and pedestrians, making cities safer and more livable.
