It’s Carers week this week 🫂🥹❤️ a subject that has been incredibly close to my heart 🫶🏾 For those that don’t know what that is.. Carers Week is an annual campaign in the UK that aims to raise awareness of caring responsibilities and support unpaid carers. During this week, the focus is on highlighting the challenges faced by unpaid carers, including the impact on their finances, employment, health, and overall well-being. The celebration week also advocates for better recognition and support for carers' needs. In a recent report, it was found that around 10 million adults have taken on unpaid caring roles due to a lack of other care options. Did you know that I am 1 of those 10 million adults? 👀 What’s interesting looking back to when I was growing up I never considered myself as a young ‘carer’, but actually, family dynamics can change and from that it can impact what the young persons role plays in the family unit. For me, that role altered when my parents separated changing my role as a young person in the house to adapting to be my mums carer at times when she needed me the most. Personally, being a carer has been a complex journey that I have had to navigate (& still try to navigate), whether that be in school or work but really more work needs to be done to ensure policymakers and politicians take steps to address these challenges and provide essential support to carers.. just saying 🤷🏾♀️ This year’s theme for this year is 'Putting carers on the map' and whilst progress has been somewhat made, more needs to be done to by us all to show empathy, understanding and breaking down the stigma by being transparent that anyone can become a carer, and it’s essential to support those without judgment. #CarersWeek #PuttingCarersOnTheMap

🌟 Today is Carers Rights Day, and it's all about recognising your rights as a carer. Often, when we're trying to balance work with caring responsibilities, we might not see ourselves as carers. Amy's honest account of how she achieved a better work-life balance, thanks to the support from Carers First, will resonate with many. Let today be the day you recognise your rights. #CarersRightsDay #CarersRightsDay2024 #CarersFirst
With one day until #CarersRightsDay2024, we are sharing Amy's story. Amy was thankful to receive help from #CarersFirst, as she was previously struggling to balance her full-time job with caring for her husband who has serious health conditions. Our #CarersFirst team helped Amy to recognise her rights as a carer, informing her of her right to flexible working, as well as creating a Carer's Passport, which has enabled her to feel confident and empowered in communicating her needs to her employer. Stories like this amplify the need for carers to understand their rights, so that they can advocate for themselves in all kinds of settings. Listening to carer support professionals at the Shared Care Scotland conference today reinforced how much we in the physical activity sector could offer carers in terms of giving them short but vital breaks from their full-time and unpaid caring roles. Informal or structured physical activity could be an ideal way to relax, refuel or reconnect to people outwith the caring relationship. However, to what extent do we adapt our services to suit carers’ needs? How well do we listen to find out how we can best support their wellbeing? Are we promoting our services to potential carers - of all ages? Are we connecting to local carer support services to share what we could offer? There is so much potential for cross-sector collaboration - and so many carers who don’t even recognise themselves as such.

#CarersWeek2024 Are You an Unpaid Carer? This week (June 10th-16th) is Carers Week, a time to recognise the millions of incredible people in the UK who provide unpaid care to loved ones. But what if you don't see yourself as a carer? The truth is, many people who provide this vital support don't identify as carers. You might be helping an elderly parent with errands, supporting a child with a disability, or looking after a partner who needs extra assistance. Here's the key: 🔑 If you regularly help someone who couldn't manage without you, then you're likely an unpaid carer. Carers Week is about celebrating YOU. But it's also about raising awareness of the challenges carers face and the support available. Feeling overwhelmed? You're not alone. Carers Week highlights the importance of self-care and finding support networks. Unsure where to turn? There are fantastic organisations like Carers UK https://www.carersuk.org offering resources and guidance. This Carers Week, take a moment to recognise your own contribution. You're an essential part of our communities, and you deserve recognition and support. #CarersWeek #PuttingCarersOnTheMap #UnpaidCarers

A Heartfelt Tribute to the Unseen Heroes 🖤 This Carers Week, let’s take a moment to acknowledge carers - both paid and unpaid, who dedicate their time and energy to support others. From the professionals working in aged care to the family members who may not identify as carers, quietly stepping up behind the scenes, carers often carry the emotional and physical load without recognition. Having worked in aged care for over 10 years, from an Assistant in Nursing to a Lifestyle Coordinator, and community development, I’ve seen firsthand the sacrifices carers make. Their work goes beyond tasks; it’s about creating connections, offering comfort, and ensuring dignity for the people they care for. On a personal note, as a carer for my son, whose autism I see as his superpower, I’ve learned resilience, focus, and the power of pure, honest connection. These lessons shape how I support aged care providers and their teams today, ensuring carers can focus more on meaningful moments and less on overwhelming tasks. So, how can we better support the carers in our lives and workplaces? Here are a few ways to lighten the load: + Check-in regularly: A heartfelt “How are you?” can offer a moment of relief to someone feeling overwhelmed. + Offer practical help: A short break or help with a task can make a world of difference. + Acknowledge their work: Carers often feel invisible, let them know their dedication doesn’t go unnoticed. + Encourage self-care: Remind carers that taking care of themselves is essential, not selfish. + Share resources: Many carers aren’t aware of the support available to them. Connecting them to services that provide respite or financial assistance can ease their burden. Carers Week is about more than awareness, it’s about action. Let’s ensure we’re supporting carers, not just this week, but every day. Their work may often be unseen, but its impact is immeasurable. How are you supporting the carers in your life or workplace? Share your thoughts and ideas below👇🏻 #NationalCarersWeek #ShowThemYouCare

Today is Carers Rights Day 💙 Every day, 12,000 people become unpaid carers for a partner, family member, or friend – often without realising it. If you're supporting a loved one with everyday tasks, medical care, or emotional support, you're a carer. The challenge is, many carers don't see themselves as carers. 🌟 It's #CarersWeek! 🌟 Let's take a moment to celebrate the incredible dedication of unpaid carers. I know firsthand how vital their role is, having family members who have been & who still are unpaid carers. Their selfless commitment and strength are truly inspiring. Here's the essence of Carers Week from their website: WHAT IS CARERS WEEK? Carers Week is a yearly campaign that aims to highlight the challenges faced by carers, and recognise the outstanding contribution that unpaid carers make to their families, friends and communities up and down the UK. Anyone who looks after a family member or friend who has a mental or physical illness, a disability, an addiction, or requires additional support as they age, is a carer. Caring responsibilities can have a huge impact on the carer’s life, both day-to-day and long term, affecting relationships, health, finances, school and work. In some cases, the individuals involved might be unaware they’ve become a carer as the transition from short-term help to long-term care can sometimes be subtle. Therefore, another aim of Carers Week is to help people recognise if they’ve become an unpaid carer, signpost what help might be available, and encourage them to reach out for help when they need it. Though Carers Week focuses on carers in the UK, the challenges faced by carers are universal, even more so in low- and middle-income countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh and India, where the awareness and support of carers isn’t as strong as in the UK. #SupportCarers #UnsungHeroes #FamilyFirst Sam Palmer-Granville Dee Beckett (nee Patel) Claire Bicknell Rob Spence Adam Payne FInstLM Gemma Cox https://lnkd.in/ezJM2Aug

Meet Paige, Support Worker for our wonderful Carers Hub Service. She was kind enough to open up and answer some questions about the role and the service. How your role can support carers? As a support worker, we connect carers to services that we believe will enhance their caregiving experience. These connections are identified through our internal assessment process, ensuring that carers receive tailored support to meet their specific needs. For example, I assist carers to access respite, which allows the carer to take much-needed break from their caring role. Additionally, I organize and lead support groups where carers can connect with others facing similar situations, providing them with a platform to share their experiences and feel understood. Why do you enjoy working for Carers Federation Carers Hub? Being part of the team at the Carers Federation Carers Hub is incredibly fulfilling for me, especially when I have the chance to actively participate in our support groups and engage with the individuals who we support. These interactions allow me to connect and offer valuable support when it's needed the most. Being able to make a positive impact, no matter how small, in someone's life is incredibly rewarding and reinforces my passion for the meaningful work we do at the Carers Hub. Is there something you'd like to say to any carers reading this? Don't hesitate to reach out for support when you need it, whether it’s from your family, friends, or organizations like ours. It's important to recognize that you're not navigating this journey alone; there are resources and a supportive community available to help you face the challenges that come with caregiving. Whether you require emotional support, practical advice, or connecting to other services, know that the Carers Hub is dedicated to supporting you every step of the way.
