For the past several weeks, when not designing and supporting features about to go GA in the athenahealth patient portal (exciting news that I’ll be able to share soon!!!), I’ve been thinking a lot about how healthcare technologies should be dynamic, adaptable, and responsive to patient needs - from cradle to grave.
Some needs are universal when it comes to patient portals: the ability to communicate with your doctor and medical professionals, review test results, schedule appointments, view snapshots of health data, and provide updates via forms and documents to a care team. Yet inherently, different needs wax and wane across the lifespan.
For example:
How might we better support the needs of parents and pediatrics - through easy-to-access and understand growth charts, family views, immunization records, parent-initiated forms and documents (i.e., 2-way DocuSign technologies)?
As those kids grow up, how might we support them through empowering them to own levels of privacy and record sharing? How might we create new means to learn about health and wellness through modern tech?
As those children become adults, how might we support them through life’s joys and pitfalls - across the continuum of primary and specialty care - such as mental health needs, pregnancies, surgeries, and recoveries?
How can all of this be mediated through the patient's technology of choice - whether web, native, secure text chat, or some combination? And yes, of course, supported by AI? 🤗 🙉
Our team has been creating rich, interactive prototypes to explore these concepts. We’re building momentum towards creating an accessible and empowering healthcare technology platform for all patients, while also leveraging our network of providers, partners, and clients who are here to serve their communities.

"Too Many Categories, Too Much Confusion"
If we took every term used in event tech today, we’d end up with over 100 categories—many of which are just terms, not actual categories. The goal is to start with a clear set of core categories and refine them over time, ensuring we don’t overcomplicate things from the start.
