In the industrial environment in particular, there are applications where the emissivity of the #measurement object is unknown or changes over time. Dust, absorbing gases or windows also lead to transmission losses between the measurement object and the pyrometer and are therefore sometimes critical. VEGA WEIGHTRAC: Measurement of mass flow on conveyor belts with radiometric measuring principle. In radiometric measurement, an isotope emits focussed gamma rays. The sensor on the opposite side of the conveyor belt receives the radiation. The scintillator of the sensor converts the gamma radiation into signals, whose quantity is detected and evaluated. Radiation Collimation - part 3 (Multileaf) Collimator: In real life, the focal spot isn't the idealized point but has physical dimensions. Because of this, the radiation doesn't originate from one point only but from all locations inside the focal spot. Taking two extreme locations (1), the picture shows that the radiation beams are slightly diverging instead of running parallel. This would result in a halo (2) of decreasing intensity surrounding the radiation field. A second set of shutters (3) is used to block off this radiation. All standard collimators use this double set of diaphragms providing a clearly defined radiation field.

Handheld X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (HH-XRF) have been established as the gold standard method for in-situ elemental determination in metals and alloys in the last 10 years. It is used for scrap metals sorting and positive material identification. The handheld laser induced breakdown spectrometry (HH-LIBS) is an emerging method which shows promising capabilities for alloy analysis and may be able to complement HH-XRF in alloy analysis, especially in alloys containing low atomic number elements like Be, Li, Mg, Al and Si (e.g. light elements).
