Every young person should have had a job for an extended period of time where he or she needs to show up on time, in clean clothes, fully sober, wide-awake, in a convincingly cheerful mood (faking it is fine—nobody cares what your real mood is because it’s not about you) and prepared to complete whatever task is assigned. This is not about being exploited; this is about learning how to separate your public life from your private life. It can be done at a factory, at a not-for-profit, at a supermarket, in the armed services or a roller-rink. A very moving and heartfelt article from last week. It really can happen to you one day, and that's why flexible working is so key. In this case the author - Minreet Kaur - acknowledges the impact a long career break will have on her career, and yet her "break" is not a break at all. She's taken on more workload, is learning new skills on the journey, skills and experience which can be applied in any workplace, and she doesn't get days off. That takes empathy, determination, efficiency, focus and resilience. When we re-imagine the future of work let's re-design it with todays work-life realities in mind, and find ways to keep professionals in paid employment as they encounter changing personal situations. And let's value the career breaks rather than penalise people for them. If you take the time to look, they're very often not breaks at all - they're a full time job plus overtime.
