UK mobile network operators are set to switch off their 3G and subsequently 2G networks in the coming years as part of a broader strategy to enhance mobile signals nationwide. All four mobile operators have committed to retiring these networks by 2033 at the latest The national switch-off is driven by the need to re-use the radio frequencies currently utilised by 2G and 3G technologies, replacing them with faster, more reliable, and energy-efficient 4G and 5G technologies. Mobile UK welcomes this step towards the deployment of world-class mobile connectivity nationwide. Looking to monetize 5G? Look no further than Fixed Wireless Access (FWA). At the end of 2023, there were 130 million FWA subscribers worldwide, with fewer than a third using 5G connections. Ericsson forecasts this number to grow to 330 million by 2029, with nearly 85% (around 280 million) on 5G. These plans are becoming more attractive due to the enhanced speed, data handling, and low latency capabilities of 5G FWA, making them competitive with traditional fiber and cable broadband services.
