The False Promise of Carbon Capture as a Climate Solution Fossil-fuel companies use captured carbon dioxide to extract more fossil fuels, leading to a net increase in atmospheric CO2 As a simple alternative, industrial hemp fiber is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world and can grow 4 metres high in 100 days. Research suggests hemp is twice as effective as trees at absorbing and locking up carbon, with 1 hectare (2.5 acres) of hemp reckoned to absorb 8 to 22 tonnes of CO2 a year, more than any woodland. #carboncapture #co2reduction #co2emissions #environment #ceo #climatesolutions #climatechangesolutions #who #un

Removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (#decarbonization)... what's all the buzz about it right now?? 🤔 Sorry methane, but you have to be pushed aside for the time being 😅 Carbon dioxide isn't this crazy monster we make it out to be. It can be produced naturally from things like wildfires and the decomposition of plants, but the problem lies in the disruption of the Earth's natural cycles. Carbon dioxide (CO2) moves through atmospheric, marine, and terrestrial ecosystems, getting stored in carbon sinks (places that store carbon) and emitted from carbon sources (places that release carbon). As we add more carbon into the ecosystem through human activity, this balanced system of storing and releasing CO2 eventually breaks, and the result is increasing global temperatures. This occurs primarily because CO2 stays in the atmosphere longer than many of its fellow gases. While methane has the potential to circulate in the atmosphere for about 9 years before leaving, CO2 has the potential to stay in the atmosphere for 1000 YEARS before leaving 😶 This is why there is so much current interest in funding projects that pull CO2 out of the atmosphere, because we can't wait for it to leave on its own. Was this helpful? Let me know! :) If you want to dive deeper into this information, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration has tons of resources! I'll leave a link in the comments 😁 Kindness Always 🌎💕 Katherine Almquist #science #economics #sustainability #katherinealmquist (Throwback to last summer during my time in the forest 😊)

The Biden administration and NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration have unveiled the National Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Research Strategyto explore ocean-based solutions for climate change. 🌊 The strategy focuses on methods like ocean fertilization, alkalinity enhancement, and coastal blue carbon, while prioritizing interdisciplinary research to assess their ecological impacts. Richard (Rick) Spinrad, Ph.D., NOAA Administrator, stated, “This strategy emphasizes the importance of collaboration across sectors to unlock mCDR's potential.” https://lnkd.in/e7aRTXeE #MarineCarbonRemoval #ClimateAction #NOAA #Sustainability #EnvironmentalInnovation

👏This milestone was achieved in the history of measures to contain the #ozone hole: A new study by international researchers published today in Nature Climate Change has revealed significant progress in the pursuit of reducing atmospheric levels of #chemicals that destroy the Earth's protective Ozone layer. Even replacement products for the even more ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons are now decreasing - five years earlier than expected. The study was led by researchers from University of Bristol and included co-authors Martin Vollmer and Stefan Reimann from Empa. 🤝According to Reimann, this milestone has been achieved thanks to the rigorous compliance with international protocols. Their verification through atmospheric measurements, as on #Jungfraujoch, and with the help of Empa, is crucial. #MontrealProtocol

It is understood that nature's carbon sinks will lose their efficiency with time but the pace at which the land sink showed these signs were not factored by any researcher. #climatechange #carbonsequestration https://lnkd.in/d4YMxUpT

🪨 This #EarthWeek, we're highlighting Berkeley Lab research based on Earth's resources and elements, today being #carbon. When rocks break down, they actually absorb CO2 in the process. What if we sped it up on a larger scale? 2 min watch: https://bit.ly/3T3FKOd
