MIT CISR is fortunate and proud to be part of a rich and exciting research environment like MIT. MIT faculty, scientists, and students do amazing research that yields fundamental knowledge and practical applications, and that research informs the work we do at CISR. We have also benefited from the leadership, support, and encouragement of the MIT Sloan School, including the deans and our colleagues in the IT group. We are grateful to the MIT community for the supportive environment and the sharing of ideas. And thank you to the companies and organizations that have been, and are currently, MIT CISR sponsors and patrons. Their support goes beyond funding our research to offering access, providing data, and agreeing to be case study examples—the stories that make MIT CISR frameworks come to life. Their leaders have a passion for the opportunities and challenges that IT, data, and digital create, and a willingness to share experiences and debate ideas. This helps us develop insights and understand best practices and it is an honor to be part of these conversations. This is the last entry in our series of MIT CISR 50 Facts for 50 Years. It has been a delight to compile these memories and milestones and to hear from the MIT CISR community about your enthusiasm for MIT CISR! Please stay in touch. Current initiatives, research needs, and development measures related to the #digital_twin were the subject of a workshop organized by the #ProdE #ProfileArea last week, attended by around 50 colleagues from various departments and institutes of RWTH Aachen University. Under the dedicated leadership of Professor Thomas Bergs, spokesperson for the profile area, and excellently moderated by co-organizer and profile area ProdE member Professor Frank Piller, an inspiring atmosphere quickly developed among the participants. Short presentations by Prof. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dieter Wegener, Vice President of External Cooperation at Siemens, Philipp Ganser from Gemineers, Prof. Tobias Kleinert from IAT der RWTH Aachen University, and Moritz Frieges from PEM at RWTH Aachen provided the right impetus. The digital twin can make an important contribution to the design of sustainable value chains for the circular economy. Given the urgency of research on the digital twin, for example, within the framework of the EU's digitalization initiatives and the introduction of digital product passports, it offers an ideal information basis. The goal of the half-day workshop was to compile all current research and development activities on the digital twin at RWTH Aachen that benefit production. Based on this assessment, the existing competence profile and overarching research and development needs were identified, which will now serve as the basis for interdisciplinary follow-up activities. By the end of the day, several key findings had emerged from the workshop: At the Aachen research location, we already have outstanding prerequisites for the further development of the digital twin. More interdisciplinary exchange and transfer formats are needed to network the diversity of skills in the best possible way, pool expertise across faculties, and combine specialized knowledge. Last but not least, a declared goal of the workshop participants was to bring the applications of the digital twin to life and accelerate the transfer to industry. The ProdE profile area will now consolidate the results and determine what needs to be implemented.

Connecting students to real-life problems. The Next Generation Digital State research group started alongside the creation of the e-Governance MSc program https://lnkd.in/dzbPHNpF back in 2013. This program educates students with a lot of potential and seeks to engage them in solving urgent problems outside academia. Since then, both MA and PhD students have been engaged with cooperative projects with which the leading NextGen group scientists are engaged. “In all of our activities, we aim to benefit from and encourage interdisciplinary thinking,” says Ingrid Pappel, Head of the Next Gen Digital State research group and programme director of TalTech’s e-Governance Technologies and Services MSc programme. “We see that this kind of integration is increasingly valued and useful, and we as academics need to provide examples of how actually to do it.” To find out more read the article „Academics in the front line of e-government problem-solving“ by Peeter Vihma in e-Estonia newsletter GovTech section https://lnkd.in/duxPEG5e APPLY FOR eGOV 1-year BRAND NEW PROGRAMME TODAY and LET’S BUILD THE DIGITAL FUTURE TOGETHER! https://lnkd.in/d2k-Z2-r #eGov #nextgengovernance #eEstonia #admissionisopen #studyinestonia
