Navigating Challenges and Upholding Quality in the #Tea Industry ☕🍃 The recent decline in tea production by 40% in #Assam and 23% in West Bengal, attributed to adverse weather conditions, has posed significant challenges for the industry, impacting both productivity and livelihoods. In these trying times, the Tea Association of India (#TAI) remains resolute in its dedication to upholding quality standards and ensuring compliance across the board. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (#FSSAI) has taken proactive stance in regulating chemical usage in tea production, a critical step towards safeguarding consumer health and product integrity. Collaboration between the Tea Board and FSSAI is paramount to our shared goal of producing "#compliantteas," aligning seamlessly with the Tea Board's vision of "one nation, one commodity, one regulator". Indian food safety regulators gave the all-clear to MDH and Everest spices after tests found no traces of a potentially harmful chemical ethyleneoxide (ETO) used to kill bacteria. The investigation comes after these popular spice brands were recalled in Hong Kong and Singapore due to high levels of ethylene oxide (ETO). FSSAI Authorities in India collected 34 samples of Everest and MDH spices for testing, including from facilities in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan to test for ETO contamination. India is a major spice exporter, and this incident highlights the importance of food safety regulations for international trade. One way to solve a problem. On 5th April, 2024, authorities in Hong Kong flagged spices from Indian leading brands, MDH and Everest, as having high levels of ETO, a carcinogen. On 8th April, 2024, the FSSAI, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India raised the permissible limits for pesticides in herbs and spices by 10 times from 0.01 mg/kg to 0.1 mg/kg. Problem Solved!

17/05/2024 Spoke at a webinar conducted by Satvikam Advisors, Council for Promotion, Research & Trade in Traditional Foods and Centre for Quality & Food Safety India definitely has one of the robust #regulations in #FoodSafety and the world’s youngest regulatory body : Food Safety and Standards Authority of India in just 15 years has emerged as a #globalleader in setting up #standards and regulations for a #safe and #nutritious food not just for its citizens but for the world. #Surveillance and #Enforcement is also being done on a large scale across India, which is forming the basis not only for legal actions but also helping evolve better regulations based on #scientificdata and #riskmanagement. #India is the top #producer, #exporter and #consumer of #Spices in the world. 12% (USD 3.89 billion) of global spices #export (USD 28.6 billion) is from India. And we are growing at 8% #CAGR. We #export 75 of the 109 varieties of spices to 159 #countries. Discussed about various #MRLs for #ETO across the globe, how India has the best regulations and at the same time how India is tightening its hold on imports (eg #infantfoods containing #highsugar as compared to those sold in Europe) which don’t comply to Indian or other global regulations. The government of Himachal Pradesh has imposeda one-year ban on the production, sale, and storage of cotton candy due to the presence of the harmful dye Rhodamine B in the samples. This ban aligns with similar actions taken by states and union territories such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. Rhodamine B, commonly used in textiles, is banned for consumption due to potential health risks. It is commendable to see state government taking proactive measures to ensure food safety, following the lead of other states. #CottonCandyBan #PublicHealth #FoodSafety #foodsafe #foodadditives #foodfacts #ingredients #foodfact #foodtechnologist #foodtechnology #foodindustry #foodscientist #punjabagriculturaluniversity #punjabi #paufoodtech Follow_Neeraj Sharma Like, share, comment 🚨

I strongly believe if the food processing sector is given the appropriate push, it could do to jobs and GDP, what IT sector did in 80s and 90s. For her to go from being a commoditised sector to an organized play, more produce needs to be processed. With a young and dynamic food processing minister, and bodies like FICCI headed by folks like Kunal Chaudhary at the helm, am hoping we will see aggressive changes in the food processing sector PN: looking forward to World Food India IndiaRetailing.com has captured the views of SCANDALous Foods (ADITOF) on the rise and scope of food processing sector very well. https://lnkd.in/dZXv49Nv

🚧 Advisory for Spice distributors amid growing concerns 🚧 #Day51 of 90, Covering FMCG On May 11, The All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF) advised spice distributors in India to be cautious and limit their stock of branded spices. This precaution is recommended due to the potential for increased regulatory scrutiny. ⛑️The Safety Issue Indian spices have been found to contain high levels of ethylene oxide in some overseas markets. This discovery has prompted India's top food regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), to inspect branded spices for this chemical to ensure they meet safety standards. 🧾Regulatory Actions In response to these concerns, FSSAI has instructed state food commissioners to collect samples from the manufacturing units of major spice brands across India. This action aims to assess and ensure the safety and quality of these products. ⚔️Classic act of Denial Spice companies, including MDH, have denied using ethylene oxide at any stage of their production process. MDH reassured customers that their spices do not contain this chemical, despite the recent findings and regulatory actions. 📉Impact on Market India's spice market is substantial, valued at ₹67,500 crore in 2020, with the branded spice segment accounting for ₹24,000 crore. Major brands like Everest, MDH, Baadshah, Sakhti Masala, Suruchi, Catch, and Goldiee dominate the market. Dhairyashil Patil from AICPDF warned that if restrictions are imposed on these brands, heavy stocking could lead to financial losses and damaged stock for retailers. He advised distributors to proceed cautiously and limit stocking until authorities provide clearance. Whats your take on this? Food supply chains are informal not unorganised in Indian region* Organising food supply chains is not as critical as formalising them. The irony as a new entrant you have no leverage to enforce formalisation or extract efficiency. It only comes with staying power . If it is inefficiencies that you are solving, it is better to be specific. Few of efficiencies worth solving are outlined in the triad. * Not all produce supply chains are informal.
