Myth: All ports operate similarly, with standardized procedures and infrastructure. Fact: Ports vary significantly in terms of infrastructure, operations, and specialization. While some ports are designed for handling large container ships with state-of-the-art cranes and automated systems, others are tailored for bulk cargo, such as coal, oil, or grain, with specialized storage facilities and loading equipment. These differences reflect the unique roles that ports play in global trade, tailored to the specific types of cargo they handle and the needs of their surrounding regions. This example highlights the diversity in port operations and infrastructure, debunking the myth that all ports function in the same way. On March 26th, a cargo ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. Behind the wreckage lies one of America’s biggest ports. Experts predict it will be months before ship traffic can resume in the port. And this will affect supply chains across the country. Accidents like this are impossible to predict. The supply implications are huge – and potentially disastrous. So it's important to work with suppliers that: Invest in deep inventories, Have redundant supply points, and A logistics network that includes shipping options such as barge, truck, and rail. 🤔🤔🤔if a typical load out capacity is gonna be 92% to ensure service flexibility, how many european ports would be needed to handle a load out? If 14,000 TEU discharge and load back is undertaken in a single port is this an efficient ise of shipping

Lithium Battery Fire Closes Terminals in LA/LB Ports Due to a tractor-trailer overturning and a lithium battery fire, several terminals at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach remained closed on Friday. APM, Fenix Marine, Everport, and Yusen terminals are still shut down, while TraPac and West Basin terminals are operating normally. The Pier T and Pier A terminals at Long Beach are expected to reopen Saturday morning, and other terminals such as LBCT, ITS, PCT, and SSA remain open. The incident did not result in any injuries and is not expected to significantly affect cargo flow. However, there is an increased risk of strikes among dockworkers on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, which could lead to cargo backlogs in the coming weeks. #trade #Logistics #ecommerce #export #shipping #supplychain #import #LithiumBattery #globalshipping #LikeAndShare #wordwideshipping #shippingworldwide #Sensitivecargo #USPORTS #accident

The evolution of container ships has been characterised by a steady increase in size and capacity, driven by technological advances, economic needs and changing trade patterns. Here's a brief overview of the evolution and current status of container ships: Key milestones in the evolution of ships: Initial vessels (1950s-1970s): Early container ships could carry 500-1,000 TEU. These ships focused on replacing bulk carriers and were limited by the infrastructure of the time. Panamax era (1980s-1990s): Ships grew to 3,000-5,100 TEU, the maximum capacity for the original Panama Canal locks. Panamax vessels dominated the market for decades due to their versatility on major trade routes. Post-Panamax and New Panamax (1996-2016): Post-Panamax vessels (5,100-10,000 TEU) appeared with larger dimensions. Following the widening of the Panama Canal in 2016, New Panamax vessels (10,000-14,500 TEU) became the standard for modern global trade. Ultra Large and Megamax vessels (2010s-present): Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs) now carry 14,501-24,000+ TEUs and operate primarily on the Asia-Europe trades. These vessels maximise economies of scale, but are limited to major ports with advanced infrastructure. 2024 Market Trends: Global fleet distribution: ULCVs account for 60% of capacity on the Asia-Europe trade lanes due to high container demand. Smaller feeder vessels (<3,000 TEU) remain essential for regional trade, particularly in areas with less developed port infrastructure. Challenges: Few ports can handle ULCVs, leading to logistical bottlenecks. Mega-ships have increased dwell times in ports and reduced the frequency of direct port calls. Future outlook: While larger vessels remain popular for cost efficiency, industry analysts predict diminishing returns due to infrastructure constraints and trade imbalances. Some experts expect a renewed focus on mid-size vessels for diversified trade routes. This development reflects the industry's drive for cost efficiency, but the reliance on ultra-large vessels also underlines the challenges of flexibility and adaptability in a volatile global trading environment. #container #vessel #containervessel #capacity #ship #panamax #teu #size
